Waiting for a quote from a kitchen company! I’m impatient and need to resist emailing again.

When a company say they will email the plans and quote over on a certain day, they should!

I planned the kitchen 11 days ago in store.
The designer said I will get the email in a couple of days.
I emailed last Thursday to ask when would I get it.
She said it would be the following Monday, so yesterday.
Nothing!
I’ve emailed her today to ask if anything is missing to prevent her sending it to me.
Still nothing! Not even a response to say it’s delayed.

Pisses me off tbh.
I need the plans fairly soon for the builder to look at. She knows this.

Even better, less grouting! Thanks so much Monkeyfacegrace

So I’ve got my quote from Wickes.

1 tall corner larder cupboard
2 tall units.
2 single door base units
1 corner base units
1 double door base unit
A sink unit
Dishwasher door
Sink, taps and quartz worktop
Plus fitting came to
10.5k

The doors aren’t even wood, they’re wrapped mdf.
That includes a discount!

Strewth that's ridiculous.
What lengths of quartz is that?
I know you're under pressure, but I reckon there's a nice holiday in that £10.5k as well as a great kitchen.

ihatethecold · 16/11/2017 06:55

We are waiting for a different builder now so the pressure is off.
Here’s the screenshot of the worktop quote

Your quartz is massively expensive!

I'm getting 7 metres of the stuff (Silestone), plus two big splashbacks for £1.2k less than that price. Try Mayfair Granite - they have an online quoter which will give you an instant price for comparison.

ihatethecold · 16/11/2017 08:01

Thanks. I thought as much.

I will tell Wickes that I’m going elsewhere because they are far too expensive for the product.
They haven’t given me any measurements that I can take to DIY kitchens.

I’m not cheeky enough to try ask for them. It will be so obvious why I want them.

Just tell them you want to make some of your own tweaks to the current plans and can they provide them, simples.

whiskyowl · 16/11/2017 08:25

I suspect if you call their bluff they may suddenly find that they can reduce the quartz!

Do be aware that you can get units supplied by one company and worktops by another. So if Wickes do the units, you can get the quartz supplied by another company. They all come out and template for the worktops once the kitchen is in anyway, so it's not even a delay. You don't have to buy it all from one place - in fact, it's often best not to.

If you want to change the supplier of your units too, measuring the space is really easy. You just need a tape measure and a mate to hold the end! Most kitchen units are fairly standard widths and depths, so if you like the Wickes design it should be really straightforward to replicate it with another supplier's goods.

ihatethecold · 16/11/2017 08:57

My kitchen is not a straight forward shape.
There is a pillar on both sides and a waste pipe that has to be accounted for along one wall.
It was an extension to a Victorian cottage that was extended again so it’s complicated.
Even the architect stood in our kitchen and scratched his head at at the differing heights and pillars etc.

CustardDoughnutsRule · 16/11/2017 09:14

Ah, it will be good for you, but also depressing, if she drops the price massively when you say no thanks.

I do like dealing with a company that gives you their best offer upfront, rather than playing silly buggers.

whiskyowl · 16/11/2017 09:21

I'm confused - you said you planned the kitchen in store? Where did the measurements come from to do this? And you say you have an architect - does s/he not have measurements?

WidowTwonky · 16/11/2017 10:25

WE have soil pipes and pillars etc. Not a problem for a good joiner. We bought from DIY kitchens, negotiated a 1.5k discount on my silestone top from a local company and found a fab joiner to fit.
Definitely worth spending time shopping around for worktops

ihatethecold · 16/11/2017 10:34

Yes widow you are correct. I can’t believe I didn’t think to ask the architect for the measurements!!

My menopausal brain is a bit shite at the moment! Confused

I’ve done this now. He will send them over early next week.
Wickes did come out and measure but haven’t given me the measurements.

@monkey many thanks will pass onto dd.

randomthoughts · 16/11/2017 21:27

You at least have the unit measurements so you can start pricing up at diy. For 5m of silestone with upstands, cutouts, grooves , splashback and window cill we paid £1,900.
We had a 2 sets on pan drawers, one sink double unit, one double base unit, two single drawerline base units, 2 double, 3 single wall units, one larder, one magic corner, 2 150mm pullouts, plus oven and fridge housing, dishwasher door and a couple of wine rackets. Including plinths, pelmets, panels and platinum delivery it came to £4,900. I sourced sinks and taps on eBay and saved a fortune.

Good luck x

monkeyfacegrace · 17/11/2017 09:02

The one thing NOT to scrimp on is a fitter. Any kitchen can look good if fitted expertly, but you could spend £50k+ on a kitchen and if it's fitted by a novice, it'll look shite.

I had a bespoke furniture maker do mine. He hand made all the plinths, cornice, cut the worktops expertly and modified bits to make everything perfect. Then handpainted and hand finished once done.

My kitchen units are actually from DIY, as (long story), they delivered in 3 weeks and it would have taken him 6 months to squeeze in my job from scratch. As it is, he's married to my best friend, so he did it all for free, as a surprise, while I was on holiday Grin But he said, without a doubt, DIY were the best quality kitchen he's ever fit (excluding ones made by him of course 😂)

Kitchen looks lovely. I'm saving the pennies up to redo mine in this new house as it sucks:-)
