Anyone with an American fridge freezer

If it's surrounded by cupboards, is it flush with your cabinets, and if so does that mean your cabinets are set slightly in off the wall? Depths of cupboards are 60, fridge we plan to get is going to stick out by minimum of 13cm which doesn't sound right to me, so wondering if the new cupboards should have been set in. Hope this makes sense!

One of the reasons they stick out from the cabinets is to enable you to open the doors. The doors on our American style FF are 17cm deep where they close in the middle, including the handles. They are 7cm deep at the hinge sides.

Yes the fridge will stick out of the front, to allow the doors to open as wowfudge said. If you want it flush, you could pull the units off the wall slightly, but you would need to leave a gap around the fridge to allow the doors to open without hitting the units. Or you could take a look at the fisher & paykel range, they can be quite expensive but they have fridges that have been specifically designed to be flush with the units.

Ours only sticks out by 5cm but we had the housing built around it. So no it doesn't need to stick out by 13cm to open. The depth of our unit was built to 69cm
