What to do with an old brick shed?

We have an old brick shed, which is about 3x4m, in the back garden. It’s about half a meter away from the back door, and it shares a roof and back wall with next doors shed.

We don’t need it for storage, as there are 2 decent wood sheds (all there when we bought). We also don’t need an office, or a separate utility room.

Would converting it into anything be a bad idea with it being one half of next doors shed?

Its a shame to waste the space and it’s not in the way of the garden, really. We also could do with extra room as part of the house, and I think making use of the space would be cheaper than a new extension

To connect it to the house would also involve having a small hallway between it and the kitchen, to leave access from the garden to the alleyway next to the house (terraced). So you couldn’t just open into it straight from the kitchen.

It would be ideal as a groundfloor bedroom, so my nan could move in with us if she ever needs to, but would it be a bit shit having a shed next door?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

What’s the roof made from? If it’s old, with single skin walls and a corrugated roof it’s probably not worth converting. If it’s constructed more like a modern garage it might be.

It’s a concrete slab roof, and yes single brick walls.

it would be difficult to insulate and to make damp-proof.

and if you do insulate (which would be required) you lose more internal area whiich would make it even smaller

Ahh man, well it was a pipe dream.

Any other uses for a old brick shed? Or just leave it empty?

It’d be perfect for a bikeshed ? going straight out to the alleyway?

Can you not just knock it down and rebuild an extension?

A supercool playhouse/den for kids?

A relative of mine knocked down a similar shed and rebuilt to make a bedroom and en suite for her teenage daughter. But hers was really well positioned and related brilliantly to the house - as PPs have said, it might be easier just to do an extension.

We used to use a shed like this for a "den" - run an electric spur out for lights and plugs, then space for a pool table, cheap speakers, free cycle sofa etc. Depends how old your kids are but round our way no one was worried about it not being insulated etc.

Sounds exactly like ours (ex council house??) We knocked it down and used the space as part of the extension. Luckily next door wanted hers taken down too so we did that for her and put a patio down for her.

Alternatively - bin store? Log store? Bike store?

if it's got a concrete slab roof, it will be difficult to demolish unless next door's half is done at the same time. Occasionally people try to knock the walls down and these roofs fall in one or more very heavy pieces, which is dangerous.

If we go for a new extension (v.likely now) it would be from another part of the house, as the current layout is very versatile, to add to. I only wanted to use this if it would be cheaper/easier to convert it. Thanks all.

@PlaymobilPirate it is ex council yes, I think ND is still council owned so I’m not sure if they’d be ok with knocking it down.

The garden is wide enough to extend from the other side, luckily so we’ll probably do that.
