If you had to cover all your windows from scratch...

What would you do? We are moving in 2 weeks time to a renovated house. Cottage style windows ( double glazed but white squares if you know what I mean) but no rails or blinds.
I'm wondering about shutters, or blinds and curtains... am worried about making a hasty decision too soon.

  1. What would your ideal window dressings be?
  2. How can I temporarily cover the windows while I decide without drilling anything?

don't know if the above are any good in the interim? on a permanent basis, I love white plantation shutter blinds. expensive but lovely. good luck!

awesome! all the best Smile

I'd do curtains. Cottage style properties tend to have small windows and shutters block a lot light so would make it worse.

Agree with jojo

I have an ancient house and have tab top curtains on these type of rods as the sandstone is too crumbly to drill into.

And start with bedrooms, living rooms can be done much larger.

Gary, those tension rods are cheap enough for a temporary measure too, great idea.
I love house makeovers, but now I've a whole house as a blank canvas I've gone blank myself!!
I've never actually been inside a house with shutters to see what they're like from the inside, hadn't thought about the light , but the windows aren't too small so could still work. Wondered if theyd look confusing over squared windows, I I don't like it when things don't line up well!

Roman blinds work well on cottage windows if you can fix externally Not in the recess as doesn't obscure too much of the window thus letting in more light

I am taking down lots of curtains and the difference is amazing especially as some of my windows are really pretty

If adding curtain make sure they don't cover too much of the window when open it can really darken a room

Laura Ashley have a good sale on until the end if the week

Soft furnishings dampen sound. Hard ones like shutters, sharpen it. If you don't use curtains, you need to consider unwanted acoustic effects.
