How to update my kitchen? (pic included)

I have a 40 year old country style kitchen. Would love a new one but not in a position to do this. We are probably going to sell in a couple of years and as we have a large block and are in a popular area we have been told that we will be most likely to sell to a developer which means that any money we put into the house we will not recover.
So I would be so grateful for suggestions as to cheap and cheerful ways to update it. Should we replace or paint the tiles? What about the cupboard fronts? We actually love the wooden bench tops as they are very solid and forgiving.
Here is a picture (please excuse the clutter of daily life). Let me know your thoughts!

Please don't paint all the cupboards grey. Who knows how much longer that craze is going to last, and they are already a neutral colour.

It's only the tiles I would address. We painted our tiles and whilst I would definitely retile if money allowed, it was the only thing we could afford and it was that or live with the old tiles that had been painted with red emulsion. The tile paint we used cleans really nicely.

You could also remove some of the cupboard doors on the top cupboards to have more open shelving, but only if you are a tidy person!

Shifty McGifty I keep going back to that picture you posted, love it. I would worry that having top and bottom cupboards in different colours would look as it it was a half finished project but it really works there. I have been avoiding blue because the kitchen has a tendency to be dark, but with white tiles I will have so much more light to play with.
I can't get on board the grey train. Am going to skip the whole grey era.
Fosterdog loved the before and after shots.
Thanks so much everyone for your input - it has really made me see the possibilities.

It's not a great kitchen in my view but it's serviceable. Anyone else will rip it out entirely so there's not much to be done with it on the cheap. The tiles are not pleasant but it will cost quite a lot to replace them. You could replace the kitchen cupboard doors (they may be inches and not metric). The doors are dated in shape so painting them is a total waste of time and unlikely to add value. It will look like diy and unprofessional. Who will want them painted? If you are not staying, a cheap makeover will look just that - cheap. It will still be a dated kitchen and someone else will take it all out.
