I currently live in Crystal Palace, but went to university in Brighton and visit friends there a lot - both places are lovely!

CP has lots of young families (and plenty of arty, freelancer parents!), really good schools, fab restaurants and bars, and a strong community vibe - in fact, I'd say I've never lived anywhere where I know so many of my neighbours/other local people.

Brighton is also cool - friendly, bohemian spirit, loads going on culturally and it is a great place to bring up children. Plus there's the sea and the countryside on your doorstep. We thought about moving to Brighton a few times but were ultimately put off by the commute - and the fact that house prices in the nice bits of the city are not much cheaper than in CP!

Either way, I think you'll be happy with your choice :)

300k wont get you much in Brighton or CP. Maybe further out from Brighton itself.

I'd chose Brighton but only as I have been SE London for a long time now.

I would not fancy commuting to London though from Brighton, and it is £££

If the seaside isn’t that much of a priority, then CP sounds like a good area. Your commute will be a lot simpler and cheaper. Don’t know about prices but with a 300k deposit + mortgage you should have some good options.

OP, if your child is the right age for school then the local authority will have to find them a place in a school, however, it may not be at the nearest school / the one you want, especially if you end up as a late application. You can check the nearest schools to any address on the Ofsted website and read the reports on the school / grade awarded (1 outstanding; 2 good; 3 requires improvement and 4 inadequate) and follow the links to the Key Stage 2 results - tests children take at the end of their primary education. Then you can look at each school's website to check out its over-subscription criteria.
