Haven't got a scoobydoo how much tiling should cost

Hello,

I live in London and have asked a builder (who has completed work in my flat before) to tile my small bathroom, replace the bath and add a new sink and vanity unit. The toilet will remain the same.

The bathroom is around 18sq ft and he has quoted £3k. This does not include the new bath and sink which I will supply.

The scope is as follows:

• Remove w/c and set aside for refit
  
• Remove and dispose of wash basin
  
• Remove and dispose of bath
  
• Walls to be replastered for tiling
  
• Floor to be levelled
  
• Remove and dispose of all tiles
  
• Retile floor and walls (floor to ceiling)
  
• Fit new bath with taps, wash basin with vanity unit and hang mirror
  
  I feel that this is very expensive but I have called a handful of builders and they never return my calls for a quote. I am going away in a weeks time and would like some of this work to be compleetd whilst I am not there...so I need to move fairly quickly.
  
  I don't want to pay over the odds solely because this guy is convenient and ready to start quickly.
  
  Can you let me know if this is too expensive, I believe it is but don't have a point of comparisson.

I’d say that’s very reasonable if you’re getting tiling all the way to the ceiling. Things like disposal of rubbish / it costs a few hundred just to hire a skip. If he’s providing things like tile glue, levelling compounds for the floor etc, then that’s a few hundred’s worth of materials.

We just paid a Tiler £900 to tile our ensuite (all the walls and floor).

Thanks both! I hadn't thought about the cost for removal and a skip so that's really helpful.

Sarah, can I ask where you are based and the size of your ensuite? Was this price only for the tiling? The difference between £900 and £3k is quite a bit and considering I will be buying the bath etc it seems that my quote is fairly high still (assuming we are both paying London prices)

I'm just outside London. I recently paid 1470 to have 27sq m tiled. Tiler charged £40 psq m which is on the lower end for my area plus materials (grout, adhesive and chrome tile trim) walls were not square so he needed a fair bit of adhesive to build it up

Also, it isn't just tiling. Things like fitting baths take probably a day as you need to level it, build a frame around it and plasterboard before you even thing about tiling. Your quote looks like it's for a complete bathroom refurb and not just tiling.

Just to give you another idea on costs. I went with a builder I trust who does really good work. The cost to strip bathroom, build toilet frame, build bath frame, re plumb, fit 2 new rads, move waste, install all electrics and lights and fit suite (wall hung toilet and vanity, large shower and bath) prep walls and floor was £4600. Not including tiling or cost of suite. Job took 2 weeks

Hi,I’m SE London. We had porcelain tiles and on the Tiler’s quote sheet these were more expensive to fit. The walls are approx 16sqm
and the floor just under 3sqm.
Don’t underestimate how much your Tiles and adhesive/grout costs.
