Question for landlords

If because of unforeseen circumstances your tenants messaged you to ask if it was possible they could pay rent Monday instead of due date Friday because that's when wages are going in. Would you be okay with that?
If the Tennant is usually always on time.

Yes - as a one off with advance notice and any issues to keep you informed.

wowfudge · 04/10/2017 18:29

Providing usually on time means they haven't paid late within the last year.

doublerain · 04/10/2017 18:33

Never been late before ever. Just had issues this month DH gets paid weekly and my wages haven't been paid right and due to this we're short and my work isn't rushing to sort it out, need my payslip first and haven't been given it yet. Just feel awful as never had to do this before. Always pay our bills on time.

I wouldn't be happy or interested. In in a similar situation, I told tenants the rent had to be paid on time and it was not negotiable. I offered to change the date it gets paid on every month to be in line with income coming in.

wowfudge · 04/10/2017 18:40

Be prepared to be told it isn't acceptable. Could you at least pay a good chunk of the rent on Friday?

AlannaOfTrebond · 04/10/2017 18:41

As long as the tenant is normally reliable I would (and have been) absolutely fine with this.

doublerain · 04/10/2017 18:42

Wowfudge we could pay a chunk on rent day didn't think of that! We could pay half

Good tenants are hard to find and keep. A weekend delay in payment is nothing. If the landlord is warned in advance and knows it is a one off they would have to be VERY unreasonable to object to this.

doublerain · 04/10/2017 18:55

I'm grateful to our landlord he's a lovely man and he's letting us rent out his home after all. I completely understand if he doesn't like it. I feel terrible. This will never happen again I'll make sure of it Sad

I think if you explain your work has messed up they would be likely to be fine. I would be.

specialsubject · 04/10/2017 19:37

You have a perfectly reasonable explanation so pass that on in advance. Communication is all.

AdalindSchade · 04/10/2017 19:40

I would be very surprised if your landlord had a problem with this if you have a good track record and it’s a one off, especially if you pay half on due date. I have to say though I would cancel almost any other direct debit payment to get the rent paid on time. I would never want my landlord to know if I was having financial issues. The gas company/council tax/phone bill don’t matter but the Landlord’s opinion does

Cantchooseaname · 04/10/2017 19:42

It would be no issue for me, with notice and perfectly plausible explanation I wouldn't have a problem.
Infact, I'd be a bit upset if my tenants felt they had to do drastic things (pay day lenders, log book loans etc) rather than speak to me. Things happen in life.

As a one off, yes. The issue I had was that the 'one off' became every month but with a different excuse until I put a stop to it.

MissEliza · 04/10/2017 19:47

It depends on his financial situation. For example, he may have a mortgage on the property which will be taken out of the account the day after your rent is due so that could cause him a big problem. All you can do is ask but he's not obliged to agree.

MajesticWhine · 04/10/2017 23:24

I wouldn't be bothered at all. Especially if there was a good reason and prompt communication. Hopefully your landlord isn't relying on the payment being that day.
