recommend white walls and what colour skirting boards?

I want to get our house repainted. Upstairs is all white and I love it but I know you need a bit of colour so was wondering if I had white walls, what colour skirting boards?

Or do I really need a bit of colour on walls and white skirting boards?

I would personally go for colour on the walls and white skirtings, But I think it would look very quirky to have coloured skirting boards and you could do them whatever colour you want as white goes with everything Grin

Honestly I'd go for white or off white skirting as will go with lots of future colour schemes and changing woodwork colour is a real pain.

MrsEricBana · 02/10/2017 14:14

Also depends on your flooring...

Don't know your house or style, but something neutral might look quite nice. Perhaps grey, beige or muted other colours eg green etc.

I think white walls and grey skirting boards can look nice, if you get the right grey (not too dark). Or maybe taupe?
Are you talking about all of upstairs? If so I'd say keep it neutral otherwise you would have to have the same colour scheme for furnishings / bedcovers etc in every room. What flooring do you have? Are your doors painted?

CoffeeCupCake · 02/10/2017 14:18

Took ages to post... have now read the other replies. I love the grey in JoJo's picture.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 02/10/2017 14:23

that grey does look nice. DH would love it!

But we've sort of gone for earthy colours in our furniture (browns/beige/red) so I don't think grey would suit.

Flooring is a mix of floorboards and carpet.

So best is to go with white skirting boards and some colour on the wall?

Maybe seashell or snow for the wall? (can you see I'm still trying to get my 'white' rooms Grin)

We have white walls with grey skirting boards/doors. We've got F&B Wevet on the walls and Cornforth White on the woodwork. We love it as it's a bit different.

White walls, ceilings and kickboards here. Wooden floors. Love how bright it is.

CoffeeCupCake · 02/10/2017 14:33

I've got F&B Shaded White in one room, it's a really pale olive-green tone (probably best to google it, I'm rubbish at describing colours!), and I love it. It sounds like it would look good with your furniture either on the walls, or on the woodwork with white walls.

JustFeelSad · 02/10/2017 14:37

Stick with white..It's classic for a reason..think of it as the frame that makes everything else in the room "pop".

JoJoSM2 · 02/10/2017 15:42

With brown and beige other stuff, you'd be better of going for beige type skirting to match the tones in the rest of the house.

Jenala · 02/10/2017 15:48

I think if you add colour to skirting it would look nicer in a matt or satin finish rather than gloss.

PerfectlyPooPoo · 02/10/2017 16:23

Viviene that's what the rooms upstairs are - all white from top to bottom and I really do like it but wondered if it was a bit boring?

It's not a big house but has really high ceilings which I think the white just plays on well on the walls.

I like it! I accentuate with strong colours though. Deep browns in the living room (curtains, sofas, furniture, wood floor), grey furniture and blinds in our bedroom with white bedding, then beachy colours in the spare room - vivid sea blues etc.
