Can you change a gas fire to a real fire??

You can take the gas fire out, disconnect the gas, check the chimney, potentially have to get a flue liner installed and then put in a grate, a Baxi or a wood burner, so yes, but the chimney checking and liner will be the most expensive (and necessary) bit.....

If you have a functioning chimney, I guess so. Do you have a fire shop near, you could get somebody out to get advice.

I love my real fire in winter.

Can be done. However, checking and sorting the chimney out if needed can run into housands. You also need to check what you're allowed to burn. We're in outer London, have an open fire but can only burn smokeless fuel as real logs aren't allowed.

Also be aware that a 20% efficient open fire really sticks two fingers up to your kids. It should be a stove.

You can, we're doing this later this year. If the opening is small you might struggle to find a wood burner to fit it and fire regulations are stricter with regards to non combustible surfaces around it. We had issues with this.

Specialsubject, you're jumping to wrong conclusions. We actually use 100% renewable energy at home. The open fire is put on for a bit of ambience every now and again. One log last 2+ hours so no two fingers at anyone.
