Drawers to go inside a kitchen cupboard?

We are about to move into a house where the current owners use a double height kitchen cupboard- a mirror of the one that stores the fridge freezer - just to store the mop and broom so it has no internal shelving. Ideally I'd like a draw unit with pull out wire drawers to go inside but I don't know who made the kitchen and I think it's about 10 years old so don't think I'll manage to get something "built in" to build in!

Any suggestions of where I might get something that would fit inside a kitchen cupboard and make it useable?

Google 'pull out larder'?
I have one of those cupboards but with fixed shelves, would love to be able to take them out as I neither have a broom cupboard or a pull out larder.

Things like shelves can be easily sourced from B&Q. You could also measure the unit and if it's the same internal dimensions as Ikea, you can easily get some kit from there.

you can easily get them. Start by measuring the external size of the cabinet (usually 600mm, may be 500mm, 400mm or 300mm) and the thickness of the boards the sides are made of (usually 18mm, may be 15mm if budget). You need to specify these when buying.

Observe if the sides are ready drilled for shelf brackets.

I recommend that you rigidly fix one or two shelves to support the sides and stop them pushing apart when loaded. It is possible for shelves to fall off simple pegs and all your belongings crash to the bottom. It is easily done with little screw-brackets, but you can also get supports with upward-facing shelf spikes, if you can drill accurately.

Drawers made by Blum are best. You can get then with metal sides and ends. Hafele are a close second. Chipboard drawers are not as good.

Kitchen companies and DIY sheds are dearer that hardware dealers. Look on ebay. There are a lot of surplus stock parts going cheap.

it is moderately difficult to fit drawers, and very difficult to align the matching drawer-fronts if you buy them separately to match your kitchen. Look for an experienced local chippy by personal recommendation. You can however use "internal drawers" that are hidden inside the cupboard doors. These are easier.

There is always such a wealth of really valuable info in PigletJohn's posts that I always take notes!!

Thank you all - that's lots to go on - I'm not confident I could fit something that is 'moderately difficult' so I might need to draft in a drill expert. Thanks for the advice about fixed shelves for stability, I wouldn't have thought of that.

We all need a hot line to pigletjohn - the advice is fab! Thankyou!!

I would put in one fixed shelf leaving enough room above it to still store sweeping brushes etc, then fit in Ikea pull out bins underneath if you can't get pull out shelves to fit the sides. The bin tracks fit to the base of the cupboard. Then you can easily store stuff in the bins but get to them easily as they pull out! Like this.

We bought some of the basket type for a large cupboard we had. More like pull out metal basket shelves.

ChocolateCrunch · 29/09/2017 16:38

Yep, definitely look on e-bay - got mine from there!

Agree with what pigletjohn says.

A joiner/kitchenfitter should get this done in a day once you know what you want. May be worth getting someone round who could suggest what you need based on your own ideas. They will also be able to sort out supply
