Fuckit. Fallen off a ladder which has smashed the Upvc glass door. He's fine. He sort of jumped off. The door is not.

We've got accidental damage cover but I've never claimed. I've no idea if the subsequent rise in premiums will offset the benefit of making a claim

I've never made an insurance claim. I've no idea how it works. Will they send someone out to look and then tell me how much we can spend on a replacement? Do we live with no door in the meantime? It's a weird size so will need a new one made I guess. Or do we just pay ourselves to fix it? Halp. Literally no clue and they close at 7 so can't call 😱

Look into the cost of replacing door yourselves (should be able to get a good idea from Google). Then balance this against your excess and the fact your premiums will rise for having a claim. This should guide you on whether to pay yourself or claim

What a shame but I am glad OH is ok. Is there an emergency number you can ring as you really need to secure the property in the meantime. I can't remember if an assessor comes out (as the only accidental damage was done to the flat below ours by wayward youths) but I am pretty sure you pay for the repair and they reimburse you.

As for the premiums we made a few claims on a block of flats we owned previously but the premiums never really went up. We went through a great broker who managed the claims for us.

You may have a deductible that you will need to pay up front. You need to start by finding out the cost of having it replaced as if doing it yourselves.

Your insurance company will ask for image of the damaged glass and will require 2 x estimates for replacing/repair.

Repairs will be authorised to lowest estimate. Payment can be made direct to contractor or reimburse you.

All payments subject to any applicable excess.

Shouldn’t make a lot of difference to your premium - but obviously depends on claim amount

So helpful. Thank you all. Our excess is £150. Having had a very quick google in think a whole door will be over £1k

What a palava. Will burrow through the policy
