Anyone have any tips for getting rid of ivy that's on the side of the house? It goes up really high.

Went into B&Q and asked for ivy killer but they didn't do it and had no advice!

Thanks

We bought Doff Ivy and brushwood killer from Amazon. Theo lay thing is that the wall is stained where the suckers attached. It took months for it to die

the only way i ever did it was with a large flat wood saw which i put behind the ivy and scraped downwards, loads came away at once and gave me enough to then get behind and pull off. i was lucky most of it came off in one big lump and i was able to do the same out the upstairs windows. one thing i did which i was pleased about was tie a string to the saw when upstairs in case i dropped it and it got stuck, (I tied it to the window handle) came in useful when i dropped it and it would have just gone to the ground where a postman was walking!

I would kill it by cutting a length out of every stem. Don't just sever them, they can heal back together. Then spray the lower part , to try to killing, before digging it out.
Then endure the few months it takes for the ivy plant on the wallmto die, and so loosen the grip it has to the wall.
Then pull and scrape it off. Carefully, because it's been very firmly attached, and may bring some of the wall surface with it.

It took months to kill off the ivy that covered our garage wall. We severed a few main stems. Dh pulled a lot of the dead wood off. We sprayed it with a weed killer . It was little anf often all the time. If you can sever down buy the roots it will loads off.
He took a chunk off the size of a small screen 😱
Eventually we got it all off. Took all summer. Worst thing is the stem .
Anyway, we attained our objective...had it all rendered last week and it looks fab.

Why?

I had to be brutal with some last year, the previous owner had left it to grow up the neighbours walls and was damaging their brickwork.

I snipped it right at the base, left it to die and then just peeled it off once it had turned brown.

Now I just snip it back so it can't take over again.

I cut off the stems near the ground, and a foot higher, remove a bit so you can see a foot or so of bare wall, then apply glyphosate gel (or liquid concentrate) to the cut stumps, while they're fresh.

If the stumps show any sign of regrowth, nip off the calloused end and dab on more glyphosate.

the part above the cut will eventually wither and die, and then loosen its grip. Given time, it will come off with weather.

I don't find spraying the leaves has any effect. They are tough and waxy so it doesn't seem to penetrate.

Great thanks all. PigletJohn - what is glyphosate gel and where can I get it from high street wise? Like homebase or something?

Its hard to buy anything that will even remotely damage it let alone kill it. I found you couldn't get anything strong enough so I'm afraid cutting it down and trying to kill off/dig up the roots is the only way forward, this could be tricky though as the roots can sometimes grow under the house. You have to keep checking it though if you don't manage to get all the roots as it grows back quickly.

Glyphosate is a very common general weedkiller. The patent for the chemical has expired so it can be made and sold under any brandname. When sold as "Roundup" the price is especially high.

You can buy it as readymix, concentrate, gel or granules. It is normally diluted in water. I don't remember where I heard about dabbing in on stumps when you cut them, undiluted, but it works. I've used a small paintbrush.

PigletJohn · 21/09/2017 12:26

Doff ivy killer is glyphosate

Weedol rootkiller is glyphosate

Roundup is glyphosate

I had a look at the Homebase website and looked at a few samples, they were all glyphosate.

Labels, packaging and brandnames differ, but look at the small print. Own-brands are likely to be the same chemical at a lower price.

Got it thanks! So snip as much as we can and rub the gel/Doff on the stalk and keep applying often!

Not that often as it will get into the water supply.it is not good for the environment.. Wait at least 2 weeks before a respray , then just spray when you see new Ivy .
