Ikea PAX Wardrobes

Moanyoldcow · 18/09/2017 16:08

We can't afford proper fitted wardrobes so we're getting some Ikea PAX ones and will fit to the wall in our chosen configuration.

Should I go into Ikea and chose all the bit there? I can't seem to work out the tools. there someone who can help a bit like with Kitchens?

Sorry - I meant I can't work out how to use the online Pax planner tool.

Yes, go in and have a look. Everything is on display with all the fab storage and lighting options. I don't suppose you'll need help - it's nothing like planning a kitchen. You just pick the carcass in the right size/colour and write down the pick up location on the ticket. You do the same with doors, shelves and rails etc. It's really very easy.

Moanyoldcow · 18/09/2017 17:15

Ok, thanks so much for the advice - I was worried it was really complicated.

We have pax, love them! When I was planning them I used Pinterest to get a good idea of what's possible

iwouldgoouttonight · 18/09/2017 17:40

We bought one recently and asked a member of staff for help. She used the planning tool on one of the computers in the shop and worked out all the bits we'd need and then printed out the codes and aisle numbers so we could find them.

There are computers in the shop for you to plan it yourself too but it made it much easier having someone do it for us as I'm sure we'd have forgotten a vital hinge or something.

StripyBlanket · 18/09/2017 18:07

We just used the online planner - made it really easy. We then just paid to get it delivered. I love Pax wardrobes :)

wowfudge · 18/09/2017 18:14

The planner stops you from trying to fit in something that won't go due the size of other fittings, where the hinges are, etc. It's really good.

RememberToSmile1980 · 18/09/2017 18:14

Hi
We bought them for our last house and have just been in on Saturday to fit out ours and our sons room. We chose everything and got one of the assistants to double check and put the order through. Did take us a bit of time as we had not planned any of it from home. Still much better than forking out ££££'s for fitted wardrobes as I've had a couple of quotes that were eye watering!

namechangedtoday15 · 18/09/2017 18:38

Same here - bought the carcasses from IKEA and all their internal bits. Got joiner to fit them so they look built in and we're just about to order bespoke made to measure doors (bit more expensive than the IKEA doors but a fraction of the price of proper fitter wardrobes).

Moanyoldcow · 18/09/2017 18:42

Thanks everyone! It sounds like we've made a good choice.

I just wish they did smaller cupboards to go over the bed but you can't have everything!

We went in and they were really helpful - go in as early as you can while it's nice and quiet - that way you can take your time and shouldn't have to wait

booellesmum · 18/09/2017 18:51

DD has one and it's great.
We did swap the baskets for shelves after a while though as the baskets couldn't take much weight and constantly fell off the runners.

Bumply · 18/09/2017 18:55

Something to take into account. If you have low ceilings like I do, make sure the height of Pax you choose not only fits, but can be moved from flat on the floor (during build) to vertical or through doorways if you are foolish enough to build in a different room and not check.

TerribleTrent · 18/09/2017 19:05

@namechangedtoday15 where are you getting your bespoke doors from? I'm interested in doing similar.

butterfly990 · 18/09/2017 19:08

If you want cupboards over your bed, look in the kitchen section of Ikea.

You will find the same colour doors in kitchens or you could do a contrast colour.

namechangedtoday15 · 18/09/2017 21:33

Terrible this is the company we're using here. Comes recommended, we've been to their showroom and been impressed but haven't got them yet. We've gone slightly taller than IKEA doors and had our builder "hack" the standard frames so the end cupboards fit the sloped ceiling. This company can make doors however you want which IKEA obviously couldn't.

We have a house full lots of Pax wardrobes, some tips, pay attention to the hinges, because there are 3.

Look at the internal storage in store, because the wooden drawer runners attach to the bottom of the drawer so you cannot put one on the very bottom, because of the hinges. So there is a gap.

The baskets runners are at the top, but they don't hold as much weight. and again those can't go at the immediate top because of the hinges.

When you are constructing them, you lay the side panels next to each other and screw in the cam lock screws (which will hold the side to the top/bottom.)

But before you attach the top or bottom pieces, screw in any drawer runners to the sides. It is much easier to do this when flat than inside the wardrobe when it is erected, especially for single 50cm wide ones. It also makes it easier to line up the runners on each side whilst they are flat on the floor rather than counting the holes.

The hanging rail can be put in when erected. Don't forgot to turn the feet all the way up before you move it and then use them to level the wardrobe as it will possible sit on carpet gripper making the back higher than the front. And finally remember that it doesn't allow for skirting board so they will sit off the wall ever so slightly.

Hope this helps.

Moanyoldcow · 18/09/2017 22:01

Thank you Jungle

We're planning to remove the skirting and cut the carpet away as the room is a complete state and needs new carpets pronto. We just have to prioritise the wardrobes as my clothes are in baskets and it's driving me mad.

I want to attach them to the wall securely - does this mean I wont be able to have a back panel on it and the back will just be the wall?

They are very heavy so I would recommend getting them delivered..

Schroedingerscatagain · 19/09/2017 09:07

Moany

They do have cupboards that go over the bed!

My local ikea has a fab display at the moment (Notts) beautiful green gloss doors on an oak effect cabinet in an L shaped set up with bridging units over the bed, it looks fab

Sadly we couldn't fit a corner section otherwise I would have done it here

Moanyoldcow · 19/09/2017 09:43

Schroedinger - that's awesome! That's exactly what I need! I need to keep saving - another 2 months and I reckon I'll have the money for a really nice set.

We had Pax wardrobes in our old house and they were great. Definitely go in and have a look; even if you end up using the online planner thing, it all makes a lot more sense when you've actually seen the options in the flesh. Also I seem to remember they had staff in Ikea who can help you with the planning if you ask them.

You can attach them securely to the wall with no bother; you can still have the back panel.

Despite being generally fairly crap at DIY, we found them really easy to assemble as well.

Ruu · 19/09/2017 12:45

I've just added a post on my blog about Pax wardrobes which might be of use? We really like our wardrobes and the textured doors look good.

guilty100 · 19/09/2017 15:43

@namechangedtoday15 Oooh, can you explain a bit more about what your joiner did and where you got the doors?

I am about to fork out £££ for bespoke storage in my dining room, and I'm wondering whether I could use a joiner and a Pax system now...

namechangedtoday15 · 19/09/2017 16:00

I posted the link upthread. Basically we bought carcasses for 2 x 100 width cupboards plus all the internal shenanigans, then 1 x 50 with internal drawers etc and then 1 x 50 with just shelves. The wall where we wanted them to go is just less than 290cm wide with odd slopey ceiling so joiner hacked the 2 50cm cabinets so they lost a corner each so they'd fit under slopey ceiling and then cut off a chunk of the frame of 1 cabinet and all the shelves so it was about 40cm wide - then installed them all so they completely fill the alcove we have. He then added a bit of storage at the top to make them completely floor to ceiling, then built a little frame the whole way around to really make them look a bit more expensive. We've chosen matt white doors which have a groove as the handle (rather than a knob / proper handle) all made to measure for a really good price.
