over full height floor to ceiling shelves behind kitchen cupboard doors?

Why do you need to stand in it?

A separate space is often cooler than the main kitchen. Traditionally they were built on north-facing walls with small windows for this reason.
Usually these days it's mainly about having more space, though.

twirlbite · 17/09/2017 14:08

I suppose it depends on how deep it is - mine will be 1.2 m deep, so a single row of shelves would be too deep.

SeaToSki · 17/09/2017 14:11

Mine has some counter space, its great to use for staging supplies and food for big parties and keeping my big appliances, so I dont have to wrestle them out of a lower cupboard. I also dont have doors on my upper shelves, so I can see at a glance what I have and what I am runnig low on and need to buy. I also keep the recycling bins in there so the kitchen is less cluttered. If I had to choose, I would have a smaller kitchen to still have a pantry.

BrieAndChilli · 17/09/2017 14:15

Ours has full hieght fridge, veg rack, box for crisps and snacks, all the boxes of cereal and then shelves with dry and tinned foods on. There is also things like picnic basket, cake boxes and the bread maker in there

errorofjudgement · 17/09/2017 14:18

Mine is in a corner so makes better use of the space, - the stand in bit is also useful for storing bottled water, cartons of juice etc.

In fact I would lose every other cupboard before I gave up my larder

Shiftymake · 17/09/2017 14:27

Love our pantry!! Walk in, stores the fridge, appliances, dry foods, tins, cereals- everything. Veg lasts longer in there as well. It has a door so can close it off when needed. My favorite room in the whole house tbh.

OK sounds great - if you were starting from scratch - what size/shape/layout would you go for? I think it might save me £££££s on Kitchen units.

Would you put crockery in there as well as food/appliances - or would that be too much in and out?

Similar to my utility - I would double its size and half the kitchen...

Our pantry contains: the freezer, shelves for giant pans/occasionally used items, wine rack, tinned food, potato storage, cat food and litter storage, folding chairs for Christmas and a ceiling airer for laundry.

another20 · 17/09/2017 15:56

Does going in and out to access the fridge cause a problem? I used to have my FF in a utility room and under counter drawer style fridge in the island - it drove me mad as never knew what I had and what was where and was always carrying bundles of stuff from utuility room.

But larder/pantry would be in kitchen - so better.....?

It is pretty sure to be larger than all the cupboards in your kitchen added together. It can be a cool, dry, unheated room, which your kitchen can't.

More suitable for storing sacks or racks of potatoes, apples etc, and stuff you seldom use, like Christmas puddings.

You put stuff on shelves so it is visible and won't be forgotten.

Long ago there was a regulation that the food cupboard or pantry was ventilated, and you often see airbricks in the corners of kitchens where one has been demolished.

JoJoSM2 · 17/09/2017 17:59

We used to have a separate room with open shelving - it was incredibly easy to see what's where. I'm not sure that saves money though as it need to build walls, put in electrics etc so some savings on units is unlikely to be substantial enough.

In the current house, we kept in everything in the kitchen. We also only have one fridge that's not even of the American type. It's all enough of space for us.

I think when people talk of fridges/freezers in the pantry, they mean having those in addition to the kitchen ones. I think it works for people who needs tons of storage (e.g. grow their own etc) or hoarders.

Personally, I wouldn't know what to do with all the space as we shop weekly and only have a few jars of homemade jams of pickles to store over winter.

Sodaface · 17/09/2017 18:04

I wouldn't put my FF in the larder it would be a faff.

I have two larders opposite each other both about 3x3m shelved to about 1/2 way down with the bottom shelf made from breeze blocks & tiled (very old house so authentic & works well)

Lots of storage space for everything. They are fab.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 17/09/2017 18:09

Ours has the microwave, wine rack, small kitchen appliances and baking trays/cake tins etc along with all the food.

girlwhowearsglasses · 17/09/2017 18:18

There's loads on Pinterest - to be a proper cold larder you need a north facing wall with vermin-proof ventilation at top and bottom - thus pulling the warm air up and out like a chimney.

It's a really environmentally wise choice because lots of what we keep in the fridge doesn't actually need it - so you can have a smaller fridge. When if I get on I plan to keep veg, butter, eggs, cakes, bread, condiments and such in the larder - in short pretty much all of what's in the fridge apart from deli, dairy, meat.

Also wine, potatoes, preserves, and home made jams etc would be in there

Also if you have animals or want to keep vermin at bay you don't leave food out in the main kitchen - so your cakes and fruit too...

Perfect!

If you check Pinterest there are plans of what height and width shelves - not too deep because you walk in and see everything in easy reach. Also slate or stone shelves are the best most expensive

just5morepeas · 17/09/2017 18:22

I used to use my under stairs cupboard as a pantry as it opens into the kitchen. When we were having our kitchen redesigned we put the fridge/freezer in there - flush with the doorway, so it's not in there far, just blocks the doorway iyswim.

It was the only place for it really, or we'd not have enough kitchen cabinets. But I really really miss my pantry. :(

socksweather · 17/09/2017 18:25

Mines about the size of a downstairs cloakroom.
No appliances in there, just floor to ceiling shelves and a wine rack.
We have deeper, taller shelves for cereals etc then progressively smaller ones for jam, spices etc.
We also have an automatic light which I really like.

another20 · 17/09/2017 20:31

I have two larders opposite each other both about 3x3m

wow sodaface you could rent those out - HUGE!!

Sodaface · 19/09/2017 02:37

Lol maybe I should, this house is a nightmare to heat.

PigletJohn · 19/09/2017 10:53

sounds like the butler's pantry and the housekeeper's room.

Kathleenkelly152 · 19/09/2017 11:22

Ours is about the size of a cloak room and I love it! There was a full height fridge in there when we moved in and I can't see any reason to put it elsewhere. It's not a hassle to go to the fridge in there, it's really still in the kitchen. We also have rows of shelves for the food and the recycling bins on the floor plus spaces for brooms etc. The shelves are not too deep so it means I don't lose food at the back of the kitchen cupboard like I used to, no more rebuying things I already have three of but can't see! Would never go back to using normal cupboards for food now!
