Galley or L shaped kitchen?

Do you prefer a galley or L shaped kitchen?

Beginning to plan a new kitchen, the current one is a galley layout, not too narrow, with 16 units. There is a space for the dining table on one end but quite tight (involves a lot of moving when having people over)

There is potential to have it converted into an L shaped kitchen (with a small possibility of an island but not definite). It would include the same amount of units if converted, and it wouldn't be as tight for a dining table.

(Maybe relevant- The only reason its tight, is because we have an american FF, next to table. If there was a standard size fridge and freezer it would probably be ok)

We're doing this with a view to sell in 5ish years, so looking for opinions on which one is preferable from a buyers POV.
But also looking for opinions on what type is better functioning (if any), whilst we're still living here.
I prefer the look of an L shape out of the two, but some say a galley is more practical.

Have you got a floor plan of the room? It's hard to say without knowing the dimensions of the room.

Attemted a diagram, sorry for the poor art skills!
The kitchen is around 3mx5m, i've worked out approx how many units would fit in the L shaped.

The island isn't a must tbh but if we did manage to put one in, I'd likely have the sink there or the hobs.

If the table is where you entertain it's nicer to get to it first from the door, so if you are a messy cook it's slightly less obvious!
I hate corners in kitchens, but I think ease of circulation it more important

3m in the narrow part or the wide part?

DanHumphreyIsA · 17/09/2017 16:23

@ScrubbyGarden good point, I'm a bit hit and miss with messy cooking. Blush

@singingmysong sorry in the narrow part, the wider part is around 3.5

Where would you put tall appliances on the L shape? I think you'd lose a lot of work surface and not sure an island would actually fit in a 3m wide kitchen, you need 600mm for worktop and cupboards, 900mm is the minimum between two cupboard spaces but 1000 or 1100 works best, especially if there are 2 people using the kitchen at the same time. I think your galley would work best and just shorten the length where you have the ff. An American one is only 300mm bigger than a standard so you wouldn't lose as much work surface or storage.

Can you turn the table round in the L shape plan? Can you manage with one short end against the wall?

RoganJosh · 17/09/2017 16:27

But actually I'd get Howdens or similar round and get them to do some plans for you.

@yorkshireTea86 The only tall appliance is the FF, I'd probably put that on the end, the side where the dining table would be in the L shape. Being completely honest, the island was an afterthought, so I'd not be fussed about not fitting that in.

Looks like the galleys winning so far, so now have everything else to plan out. Thanks allGrin

@rogan I I went for the L shape, the table would be able to go either way, it would just be a but tighter to get by if it was the opposite way than in the diagram.

Currently in the galley, the chairs kind of block the fridge slightly, and when moved out for guests it then becomes a squeeze to get in on either side. But theres a large window above the table so its the obly lay out available currently.

I love a galley kitchen. Easy to fit and every corner is such a waste. And think how many pan drawers you could have!!

Could banquette seating help with fitting round the table? Though it can be a bit awkward to get in and out - a pedestal table helps. Alternatively stools instead of chairs so they tuck really well out of the way.

SingingMySong · 17/09/2017 17:13

If you have windows in the left hand corner that's another reason not to put units there.

Could you move the FF onto the top wall to shorten the bottom run and give you more space round the table? Then perhaps put a couple of extra cupboards in the top left corner, 30cm if need be, for less frequently used storage.
