Tudor houses

Talk me in/out of them.

Relocating and my dream is a 15th C Tudor Hall house. Where we are looking this is possible. They are all Grade II listed.

I don't care about: wonky floors and walls, not being able to decorate in a modern way/ smaller windows (the ones I've looked at tend to be detached with light all around which I love), doing work ourselves

I do care about: large garden, outhouses, living rurally, insulation and noise, design, being part of the history of something amazing ( custodian?) and quirky unique buildings.

I have discovered wooden framed buildings are very well insulated - more than your average Victorian house, and if it's got floors that have been there for 200+ years it's only going to improve...

I'm not stupid enough to believe that an old house doesn't need work - we're quite handy and love researching ans doing things in the way they're supposed to be (lime plaster etc)

Any wisdom to share?

I love this thread. I WANT PICTURES, THOUGH!!

I'm sitting in my very unglam, bog standard 1920s semi, imagining the creaking beams and the soft light through your windows! I have no experience of being in older houses, apart from the very occasional National Trust visit, so I can't really imagine what it must be like actually to live in one.

And, should you have a spare £48, you can join The Listed Building Owners Club! 😂 Actually be in a club. For old houses.

Wow, there's nowt so queer as folk.

This would be my idea of Hell. It sounds like a right money pit. Do you really want to be wasting so much money on boring crap like paint and house stuff when you could spend it doing fun things?

Heron, the Op was asking for pros/cons from personal experiences, if you don’t have experience seems odd to comment negatively. After all, people make different choices on what brings them enjoyment, obviously not the Op’s idea of hell or she wouldn’t be asking.

I absolutely love my house - without fail some element of it brings me/DH enjoyment every day.

I hear what you’re saying and wouldn’t want to pour all our money into it meaning nothing left for other fun and nice stuff but to be fair, most people spend on their homes regardless of age.

It’d be awful if these beautiful historic houses fell empty and into disrepair because no one was willing to take them on. Well in my opinion anyway 😉
