thats it really - table will be 3.5m - island 4 m - room is 11x5 m - how do I match/contrast all 3 woods?

Perhaps a bit more information on what you doing to help us make suggestions for you?

I just wouldn't have a wood island top. Have granite so less of a problem! Consider a ceramic floor too. Large format looks smart.

I'd probably go with a painted table and chose another material for the chairs + natural colour wood for the floor and possibly an island.
If you try to match all the wood it'll be too much. If you go for different types, it's likely to star looking messy.

Also, will this be your main dining area that needs to accommodate dinner parties? If not, then it's worth getting a smaller table. Or at least an extendable one. With few people sitting at a mammoth table, you often end up at one end and it somehow feels a bit uncomfortable and awkward.

Thanks all. I have large porcelain tiles at the moment and HATE them. They show all the dirt, too cold (even with UFH), and are hard and echoey.

Wooden floor is a for warmth and comfort.

Current kitchen - which I put in 17 years ago is all v modern, minimal - loads of stainless steel etc. Dated now and hated it from day one from a practical point of view.

My new kitchen I would like to be warm and casual like a gastro pub.
I would like the island to be warm and social. It will not have any appliances on it - so a big lump of reclaimed wood is my pref.

Painted table is a good idea - maybe zinc topped?

So should floor wood colour be pale to contrast with wood of furniture?

We have a big family (immediate and extended family) so big table needed.

Are there are particular gastro pubs that you think look amazing? Perhaps you could use them for inspiration and copy the mixture of surface finishes that they have?

Thats a good idea - my local has v pale pristine original parquet, then mish mash of woods across reclaimed vintage chairs and some painted tables....

We started with the floor decision as I wanted reclaimed boards to match the rest of downstairs. I hate wooden worktops because of maintenance and the need to be careful with water and staining things so went for quartz. I think that will be your hardest decision. But we have used plywood in the kitchen and dining bench which looks okay with floor. To break it up the dining table will have metal legs and probably ply and Formica top.
