How to get rid of black mould

micropig · 12/09/2017 17:48

DH has rented the same flat for a decade, I moved in later. There has been a considerable black mould problem in the bathroom since before I met him, and to be honest we both have no idea how to get rid of it. Now we are TTC so we desperately need rid of it. I don't think the landlords will do anything about it, so is there anything we can do? I've tried scrubbing at it with baking soda paste but I end up with a dead arm and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Bleach
And ventilation
You need a window open most of the time

specialsubject · 12/09/2017 17:50

damp problem? Extractor fan not working? Bathroom window not opening?

your landlord does need to fix these things, and can be forced to do so.

gastropod · 12/09/2017 17:55

Not bleach, apparently it just displaces the spores (or so I read somewhere).
You need the HG mould remover spray - totally miraculous. Spray it on, wait a few minutes, and wipe off the residue, if any. The mould just disappears!

Oblomov17 · 12/09/2017 18:00

Watching.
HG you say?

dementedpixie · 12/09/2017 18:03

I bought kilrock mould spray and its good. So is dettol mould and mildew remover. I spray it on and leave for hours

nancy75 · 12/09/2017 18:04

If there is a lot of black mold you should really wear a mask when cleaning it off as when you wipe it releases bits in the air. You definitely need a mold spray rather than bleach. If it's in the bathroom you need to make sure it's ventilated to stop it coming back ( extractor fan & open the window as much as possible)

tissuesosoft · 12/09/2017 18:04

If it's in the sealant it'll be easier to take that out and redo it.

OlennasWimple · 12/09/2017 18:04

You need to clear the mould (proper spray) and then prevent it coming back (proper ventilation)

Those dehumidifier things where you have crystals and a drip tray underneath can work really well if you empty them regularly, but much better to have a proper extractor fan or an open window

wowfudge · 12/09/2017 18:05

Most of the mould removers you can buy are basically bleach.

Polter · 12/09/2017 18:10

Mould sprays are just strong bleach.

Spray HG mould spray and leave it for a few hours. Wipe off with kitchen roll and reapply if needed. Wipe with kitchen roll again and leave to dry. Don't wash it away or use a wet cloth.

Once properly dry re-paint with a bathroom paint which will have a fungicide in it.

To prevent mould again you need to heat and ventilate the room. Ideally after every bath or shower leave the door and window closed and run the extractor for 20 minutes. If you don't have an extractor leave the window open and the door closed for as long as possible and as often as possible.

Is a LOT of black mould in a house potentially injurious to health?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/09/2017 18:14

HG mould remover

Goldmandra · 12/09/2017 18:15

Another vote for the HG spray. we buy it in B&Q. It beats bleach hands down.

Just be careful not to get it on your hands or breathe it in.

BarchesterFlowers · 12/09/2017 18:18

HG vote here too.

KoolKoala07 · 12/09/2017 18:21

HG here to! We have a single skinned porch that gets mouldy in the winter (condensation). I sprayed it on thinking it would barely touch it. Returned half an hour later and couldn't believe it. Mould all gone. Rinsed with a damp sponge, as good as new.

hungrytillater · 12/09/2017 18:21

I was going to say bleach, hate the stuff but have to scrub the bathroom ceiling with it every 6 months. However I will now be trying hg spray! As a preventative measure, ventilation.

didireallysaythat · 12/09/2017 18:22

HG. Fantastic stuff.

BillywigSting · 12/09/2017 18:34

Another vote for hg here. We had a quite serious mould problem in our bathroom due to lack of ventilation. It took an extractor fan and a monthly squirt of spray to fix but touch wood it seems to be working so far.

Oddly enough it's worse in spring and autumn, when it's too warm for the heating to be on, but not warm enough to dry quickly.

Crumbelina · 12/09/2017 18:55

Another vote for HG!

MozzchopsThirty · 12/09/2017 18:57

HG spray is a cleaning product from heaven

Leaves your bathroom gleaming

MrsPworkingmummy · 12/09/2017 18:59

Get a paint brush, and paint bleach onto it. It 100% removes mould and damp spots. It might change it an orangey colour first. Let it dry, then go over it again. Keep your windows open too when you're having a bath and shower x

micropig · 12/09/2017 22:15

Wow, thanks so much for all the replies! I'll definitely get some HG spray and give it a try.

We don't have an extractor sadly. I leave the window partially open constantly but DH has a habit of shutting it to have a steamy shower then leaving it shut. He's lived here for over 5 years before I moved in so I think he gets the blame on this one, lol.

specialsubject · 13/09/2017 09:44

Don't bother with cleaning - waste of time if he can't be arsed to open a window. The mould will be back in days.

micropig · 13/09/2017 12:21

Lol, he started opening the window (or leaving it open actually, as I always have it open) once I pointed out that it was the cause of the mould. Was too late then though as the mould was already there.

Anyway I'll get him to clean it (or pay someone else to) and hopefully that'll put him off shutting the window in future!

Another vote for HG - I bought it last week TOTALLY based on older Mumsnet threads and it worked ! Unfortunately I didn't protect my clothes so have had to throw away a black t-shirt I was wearing, but at least the sealant in my shower is back to white.
