Party wall

We are planning a ground floor extension which will extend out by 3m from the existing wall, we have applied to planning for approval as the pitch on the roof will be 4.5m rather than 3 on the recommendation of the architect.
Our neighbours have objected and we are awaiting planning decision. They have also requested a full party wall agreement and surveyor to be appointed. I'm now freaking out about the implications of this ad don't know where we stand at all. Have tried to engage them informally with limited success. Any advice on where I can read illy to understand the implications and our and their rights?
Thanks

To be honest the best place is probably the explanatory booklet to the act itself here

Thank you that's helpful (and I'm slightly embarrassed that hadn't been my first port of call!)

Oh don't be at all embarrassed. It's a bit more accessible than most acts so it wouldn't normally be the first port of call!

Don't be frightened of party wall thing. We have had to do a couple over the years. It actually can take a lot of heat out of situations especially where neighbours don't like the plans. May save slot if aggro, lots of info around. Good luck!
