Where in the North East?

I'm a Teessider but living in London for many years and about to move 'back home'-ish. Considering Richmond, Barnard Castle, Alnwick, Hexham or Berwick. Would be very glad for advice/views on these places. Good walking country and an excellent Indian restaurant are both essentials.

Trying again! Would be really grateful for your thoughts....

Richmond has a very nice Indian. all the places you mention are great for country walks.
Sorry not much help Smile

Comps83 · 17/09/2017 16:02

Tough choice
They're all pretty similar and nice
Have you visited them all?

xrayyankeezulu · 17/09/2017 16:07

Why not go more coastal & head Whitby way or Saltburn both gorgeous places & lovely country walks

ImDoingLaundry · 17/09/2017 16:10

I love Barnard Castle, spent a lot of time there growing up and still go to visit friends. Some family still live nearby. Excellent Indian, very good fish and chips too. Lots of beautiful countryside around.

If I ever moved back up to the north east, it'd be in or around BC.

Rudedog · 17/09/2017 16:14

Do you want to live somewhere very remote - my friends moved back from Barnard Castle as they kept getting snowed in, cost of living is high there too.

Hexham would give good access to Newcastle

NebularNerd · 17/09/2017 16:21

I live in Barnard Castle. It would definitely fit the bill based on your criteria! Have never been snowed in - major roads leading out of the town which are kept clear. There are lots of new builds currently being built too so the town seems to be expanding. If you have any questions send me a message and I can try and answer! 😀

somewhereovertherain · 17/09/2017 16:22

All quite different and far a part for me would be Barney, Richmond or Alnwick.

Great Indian in Richmond.

somewhereovertherain · 17/09/2017 16:23

Like Hexham as well

HolyShmoly · 17/09/2017 17:16

I believe there is delicious indian in Hexham. Or it might be Corbridge...
Alnwick would be my top choice with it being on the coast, second would be Hexham, but mostly because I'm not really familiar with the other places.

DrSeuss · 17/09/2017 17:23

Richmond is really N. Yorks but is still great. Good schools, too. But if you're a Teessider, and you clearly really are as you can actually spell it, why not Eaglescliffe/Yarm? There's a good Indian in each, btw!

meg54 · 17/09/2017 17:25

All of these are nice places, with gorgeous countryside around.
Do you have any other criteria?. Transport, schools, buying/renting, nightlife property syle etc....

FreckledNose · 17/09/2017 17:52

Thanks everyone. Kids grown up so schools not needed. Need to be within striking distance of East Coast line to London for occasional work commitments, so Alnwick and Berwick fit the bill. But Barny and Richmond not a million miles from Darlington. Other criteria would be a proper butcher and greengrocer and stockist of BarryM nail paint....but maybe that's too much to expect? Thanks for Eaglescliffe/Yarm suggestions - I'd forgotten about them. Am a Norton girl, but that's short on country walks.

HolyShmoly it's Corbridge although haven't been there in years so I'm assuming it's still there/good. But there's a train station there and easy journey to Newcastle if needed.

Rudedog · 17/09/2017 19:46

Direct trains from eaglescliffe to London these days!

DrSeuss · 18/09/2017 21:02

Norton is pretty but the area around the Green is a traffic nightmare twice daily due to the local private school. Yarm has country walks, nice shops, an Indian and Teesside Park will sort you out with nail varnish.

DrSeuss · 18/09/2017 21:03

Rudedog- we must be near neighbours!

Rudedog · 18/09/2017 21:08

@DrSeuss I'm in the boro - spend a lot of time hanging around eaglescliffe whilst child is at activities

SasBel · 18/09/2017 21:28

I recently moved to Teeside, how about Guisbrough? Stokesley?
Annec and Berwick are fab too.

FreckledNose · 18/09/2017 22:28

Thank you, all of you. Not sure I'm that further on except reassuring endorsement for my choices plus other places thrown into the mix. A surfeit of riches in N Yorks, County Durham and Northumberland - never let on!

DrSeuss · 19/09/2017 20:24

Rudedog- they don't do music at a church do they?

Rudedog · 19/09/2017 20:34

@DrSeuss maybe 😜

Northumberlandlass · 20/09/2017 08:31

I live in Hexham if you have any questions Smile
