Can this be done on minimal money and time?

DP has recently been struggling with keeping up with his work. He's self employed and has to spend most days out seeing clients and as a results is falling behind on admin. I work evenings so he has DS and I also work Saturdays so that's out too.

He's said in the past it'd be great to have an office in the house as that would mean he can work after putting DS to bed.

We have an attic/loft that we've done up in the past, it's all plastered, painted and has carpets down but ATM it's full of DPs things, clothes and shoes, memorabilia, boxes etc you can't really walk there.
I'm thinking of sorting it and putting a small office space in there.
We need it ASAP so any ideas would be really appreciated.

We don't really have any spare cash ATM but could probably find a small amount.
I think to sort it ASAP we will need some cheap fabric wardrobes, clothes rails and shoe racks to get his clothes in order, we would move the boxes and bits to one side of the room and set up a small office space initially which can then be gradually expanded and sorted as DP sorts through his things.

I feel like I need to do it myself as DP can spend hours on menial tasks (Last time when he went up there he spent over an hour arranging his CDs). I can't sort his boxes and stuff out but can probably tackle the clothes. The room has an awkward shape, as its where the roof is so it has a high point and then goes really low at the sides so tricky for space.

Any ideas and recommendations?

Seems like a cheap solution and you have already decided a good way of storing the belongings. Would it be possible to clear some to make more space?
Is there any heat? It sounds like you could put an electric radiator up there. You don't mention any velux, so the ventilation would rely on the loft hatch being open, which also might make it chilly.
A cheap working surface, is a flat door on two trestles, a tried and tested method in our family. Ply faced doors are very cheap ( or might be free second hand) and IKEA used to sell trestles.
A door also gives a larger working surface than the average desk.
Failing trestles, breeze blocks could be supports, although heavy!

I suspect you can't make a DIY trestle for cheaper than you an buy the cheapest IKEA trestle desk!!!!

This isn't a Property/DIY problem, it's a DH problem. He's using the lack of office as an excuse.

He doesn't like admin. He can probably make better/more lucrative use of his time doing whatever it is that he does for a living.
Sub the admin out to someone else.

Does he need all that stuff - it's hardly accessible. Maybe it could be got rid of and then he'd have a huge space for his office.

eggsinarow · 04/09/2017 12:07

@senua it's not an excuse. Like I said he used to do it in Saturday's as I used to be off but since work changed my days he now has to look after DS.

And it's not worth contracting out and it's him that needs to do it really as its sorting his own rota, catching up on orders, few financial bits etc.

@rizlett he keeps all his clothes up there as we are v limited for space in the bedroom so he does go up regularly.
The other stuff is some memorabilia and bits from when he used to do a certain sports at a national level so we are hoping to keep it and hopefully have somewhere to put it once we upsize.

Like I said some of it will need sorting through which is something only he can do.

Will google trestle desks!!!

Does he actually need an office space or a desk or does he just think this will solve the problem? If you are working in the evening and DS is in bed why can't he just sit in the kitchen or on the sofa with his laptop? What is it he needs to do that he can't do elsewhere in the house? Genuine question - not being snarky.

eggsinarow · 04/09/2017 13:45

@blueskyinmarch he needs access to a printer and fax machine and also there's files and other paperwork. And he's got a specific system set up on his computer that would take time and £££s to transfer onto a laptop - that we would also have to buy. We have a tiny house as it is and I'd rather have a designated space for it somewhere out of the way otherwise I'm worried I'm risking random crap and bits of paperwork all over.

Thanks eggs. I see now. I think your best bet it a trip to IKEA. They have great space saving ideas.
