great thread. i live in rented accomodation and the kitchen was very poorly laid out. Hardly any cupboard space and no kitchen drawers.

Any ideas will help me.

Only tip i have is for the keys / miscellaneous items. We have a key holder and a sideboard with drawers in the living room which helos with that.

Tea towels are hung on the oven door and stick on hooks on the side of the fridge freezer.

Kitchen roll is on a hanger ovr a cupboard door.

I would love the lakeland cling film /foil dispensers.

AlternativeTentacle · 04/09/2017 10:09

We have just had a new kitchen.

We put a large tall cupboard next to the fridge freezer, and all the food is now in either one or the other.

Above and to the left of the oven and hob, we put a wall cupboard - all the crockery, cupa, glasses and the aeropress stuff is in there. And the top shelf is nutrininja etc.

the cupboard below the counter to the left of the oven, is all the cookware.

The cupboard to the right, all the cutlery and utensils. And all the long stuff, so foil, rolling pin etc

Under the sink, all the dishwasher stuff, and cleaning stuff. Plus clean tea towels. Dirty ones go straight into the machine.

the only other cupboard is on the other side of the washing machine, and that has mixing bowls/less used cookery stuff and the first aid kit.

On the work surface, is the toaster, kettle and milk frother. The one chopping board is on there when in use, otherwise it is leant up on the windowledge.

That's it!

Ah you need to google "Dynamic space" and the Zone system, I love it.
[https://d1.blum.com/BEC003/dynamicspace_ep_dok_bus_%24sus_%24aof_%24v1.pdf here]]

You organise your kitchen by zones, obviously you have to work with your layout but in brief (these go in order round the room)

Consumables zone - Fridge and larder cupboard - you would unpack your shopping here
Non consumables - crockery, cutlery, etc also I have kettle and coffee machine here so out of the main cooking area.
Cleaning - dishwasher, sink , cleaning products. (Batteries etc) Bins.
Prep - big prep area, utensils, chopping boards , machines, possibly frequently used ingredients like salt, oils
Cooking - hob, oven nearby, set down space, pots and pans and tins.
Serve - space to plate up/serve out may have serving dishes/mats in a big kitchen

For non kitchen stuff like admin I would have a separate little spot or drawer

This works for me and it means you always have stuff to hand, can unload dishwasher straight to cupboards, make tea without walking miles, drain saucepans without crossing the room, push peelings into the bin etc.

Having lived in houses where everything was the wrong way round even in large expensive kitchens, it makes a difference.

I have stuff like spices, oils etc convenient for both hob and prep zone as these are things that you take out, use a bit and replace.
Cans, packets etc that don't get replaced after use are in more peripheral cupboards.
I have chrome spice racks screwed to inside of the door, limits things disappearing to back of cupboards.

Make sure crockery glasses etc are stored close to dishwasher for speedy putting away.
Knives forks etc are midway between dishwasher and table.
Wooden spoons and prep utensils between hob and prep surfaces

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 04/09/2017 10:43

Cam you link to which ikea cubes you use for small cluttery stuff.
It's my downfall

StripyBlanket · 04/09/2017 11:43

NotMeNoNo thanks for that link. It's fab

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 04/09/2017 12:40

I don't have a tall cupboard for mop etc but instead I have 2 spring clips mounted top and bottom of back of utility door, and mop clips tidily there and dries quickly.
Very cheap and effective

NotMeNoNo · 04/09/2017 13:08

An Ikea type rail screwed to a base cupboard end is good for tea towels.
I've also become slightly addicted to the clear plastic trays/organisers in TKmaxx. Good for bitty things like cake decorations and tassimo pods.

YorkshireTea86 · 04/09/2017 14:14

I'm in the middle of planning our kitchen. Tea towels in the thing I'm stuck on, at the minute they are on the cooker handles but in new design the ovens aren't near the sink, I think we'll end up putting them over the handles of the drawers nearest the sink for the in use ones.

Not current but planned for new kitchen...
Kettle & Toaster - out but separate from each other so I don't end up killing dh when he plonk his chopping board down in front of the kettle when I'm doing tea and he's doing toast!

Crockery - pan drawer near to dishwasher
Glasses - cupboard above that pan drawer
Cutlery - drawer above pan drawer
Utensils - in a utensil storage thing on the side so I can grab as I cook, also has spoon rest that comes off

Everyday pots and pans (lids?) - pan drawer under hob
Everyday casserole/oven trays dishes - drawer under oven
Colander - drawer under hob

Vases - only own a few that are used decoratively around the house

Occasional use pots/pans (eg Wok, baking trays) - corner cupboard
Occasional use appliances (liquidiser, nutribullet, coffee pots) -other corner cupboard

Everyday serving dishes and platters - wall cupboard
Occasional use serving dishes and platters - wall cupboard

Chopping boards -not sure yet possibly in another pan drawer near toaster
Trays - as above
Lunch boxes, water bottles - in and Tupperware cupboard above oven, wb near crockery

Tea towels and dish cloths - 1) clean, 2) in use, 3) dirty - see first paragraph, dirty ones go straight in the wash
Washing up liquid, surface cleaner - under sink
Dishwasher tabs, salt, rinse aid, - under sink

Broom, dust pan and brush - lootility
Hoover - lootility
Mop, bucket, floor cleaner -lootility

Tin foil, cling film -wide drawer

Miscellaneous -- batteries, shoe polish....this goes to infinity and beyond. - in cupboards in utility in cellar

Whattodowithaminute · 05/09/2017 05:53

Following this thread will be very useful in the forthcoming kitchen planning

treaclesoda · 05/09/2017 06:03

I am fortunate to have a larder, so that sorts out the food storage issue.

I keep the toaster in a bottom cupboard and only bring it out to use. I have drawers for pots and pans and I use a tension rod to section off one part of the drawer so that I can stack the lids on their sides. I don't have a drawer for junk or clutter, that way I can't put any junk or clutter in it. I use magazine folders to store things like chopping boards and baking trays in cupboards, that way they are on their sides instead of piled on top of one another.

Dirty cloths/sponges/tea towels go straight into the laundry basket to be washed.

Low down corner cupboard is the home of all those things that aren't used as often, eg food processor, blender etc.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2017 20:32

Kettle & Toaster out on the surface

Crockery In a 60cm wide pan drawer, holds a full set with each type having their own stack
Glasses wall cupboard
Cutlery drawer
Utensils hanging on the wall - ikea pole with s shaped hooks, wooden spoons and random bits in cutlery drawer

Everyday pots and pans (lids?) hanging from a ceiling rack
Everyday casserole/oven trays dishes other pan drawer
Colander joesph joseph bowl set with colander, sieve, mixing bowl etc which all nest together so take minimal space. Live in wall cupboard

Vases downstairs loo windowsill!

Occasional use pots/pans (eg Wok, baking trays) mainly in the pan drawer with the others, few live in the third oven which is rarely used. We also have a narrow pullout which hold pizza trays, muffin tin etc
Occasional use appliances (liquidiser, nutribullet, coffee pots) corner base cupboard, in wicker baskets (2 one each shelf) so I just lift the baskets out and don't lose stuff at the back

Everyday serving dishes and platters don't really have any, we serve in the kitchen!
Occasional use serving dishes and platters

Chopping boards hard to describe - window is recessed by about 30cm with worktop going in to the recess, so the copping boards stand leaning against one side of the recess, kind of tucked away but handy
Trays none
Lunch boxes, water bottles tupperware lives in a wall cupboard, the rest are always in use so don't really have a home!

Tea towels and dish cloths - 1) clean, 2) in use, 3) dirty don't have any, sponges get binned regularly!
Washing up liquid, surface cleaner under sink, couple of tubs under there keep things tidy and stop them getting lost and stop us buying too many random cleaning products
Dishwasher tabs, salt, rinse aid, as above

Broom, dust pan and brush lives in our under stair cupboard, mounted on door
Hoover dyson, wall mounted
Mop, bucket, floor cleaner steam mop, just stands...wherever!

Tin foil, cling film magnetic holder attached to side of fridge freezer, can't be seen except from a specific angle
Bin liners under sink

Food:
Tea, coffee erm,we don't drink either!
Bread & jam/peanut butter/marmite etc wall cupboard
Oils, herbs, spices, vinegars etc 15cm pullout unit for spices, oils live out beside cooker
Rice, pasta, tins, jars rice and pasta are in a wall unit, stored in oxo good grips jars which makes it easier to see and manage, jars and tins in a le mans corner base pullout which is ideal for this
Baking - flour, sugar, decorations wall unit, ditto above, big oxo good grips glass sealed tubs with labels for different sugars, flours etc. Very neat!

Bins & recycling:
Food waste
Paper
Glass, plastics, tins (all together)
Main bin we have a simplehuman butterfly opening dual compartment, one side does landfill and the other recycling. We don't drink so not enough glass to be worth a glass bin. All other recycling is mixed here

Admin:
mail, stuff to read, action, recyle, file
stationary, pens, sellotape, glue, etc not in kitchen

Dog food and bowls.*not in kitchen but we have large cats, we use ikea sortera boxes under the stairs for their food (10kg sacks!), litter etc.

Clutter zone:
keys, phones, wallets, coins

Miscellaneous -- batteries, shoe polish....this goes to infinity and beyond. lives elsewhere but Ikea Kupol with a compartment for all of these random things
