Cream paint help please!

I'm trying to find a nice light cream paint that doesn't look like magnolia or mustard.

I like the colour attached which is apparently twisted bamboo 2 so I bought a tester of this and it looks mustard and so dark on the wall! My walls are white so the colour behind isn't affecting it.

So far I have tried
Timeless
Dulux jasmine white
Dulux orchid white
Dulux natural calico
Dulux Nutmeg white
Summer jasmine home base own
Crown Ivory cream
Crown Antique cream
Dulux twisted bamboo 2 & 3
Wickes gardenia
Wickes champagne
Dulux almond white

All of the above look either brown, yellow or mustard when dry! Its going in a big open plan room with cool white led in the night and lots of sun/light in the day. Night or day doesn't seem to make a lot of different to the colours other than a paler brown or yellow!

Pointing is super, a proper cream. I also like Wimborne white. I think dimity will be too taupey for you, although I love it!

Puffpaw · 07/09/2017 21:55

Try Wimborne white, don't quit now!

Hi, we had this problem too and the first picture shows the first tester pots we tried. We went for a different one in the end, I can't remember it's name but it is from the dulux range with light reflecting particles in it. The picture is really dark but hopefully you'll be able to compare it to the white dado rail.

We went for Dulux Timeless in the end and I love it!

It's come out as a soft ivory colour. We had so little time to plan the work on our house that I literally googled Munsnet white paint and picked what seemed to get the most approval. Mumsnet did not disappoint! So pleased

I have a similar problem and have been avoiding anything that might have a touch of yellow in by looking at the paint charts. However Timeless looks a yellowy cream on all my walls. Any ivory or antique white has a yellow tinge - ivory is a yellow colour anyway, so is jasmine.

I am tempted by Dulux white cotton which is not cream but is an off white. The only way to avoid a yellowy tinge is to avoid 'cream' and go for 'off white' which will more likely have a greyish or slightly off white base.

Craig & Rose, pale mortlake cream

I like this too. I would love to get the same colour but they all look different in our house. We're currently thinking we'll go with Dulux Fine Cream. That seems a touch whiter than the walls in this photo.

We liked Timeless in theory but the sample looks greyer than on the website.

consult a professional painter and decorator.

I have just painted two bedrooms in Dulux trade colour matched to Farrow and Ball Dimity in two bedrooms which are North facing, I really like it but it is darker than I thought it would be. Our last house was Almond White so I have ordered Almond Whiite for the lounge. I would say that I didn't like it when I was first painting it onto white walls as I thought it looked too brown but when it was dry and the whole room was done it looked very different.

Hi OP - I have Timeless upstairs in my house & Jasmine White downstairs. I would say JW is more of an off white/cream but not yellow. I had it in several rooms off a previous house too, not yellow and def not brown! PM me if you’d like pictures of JW vs Timeless in situ

@FlamingoFlower what did you go for? Would be eternally grateful if you could let me know!

MikeInLon · 24/10/2022 18:04

We went with Dulux Calico.

Subbaxeo · 25/10/2022 07:36

Maybe veer away from the warm whites which may come up yellowy due to the light in your house. Try a very pale stone colour-stone 1 paint and paper library for example. Or something like school house white by f&b.

Farrow & Ball Wimbourne White. Has the tiniest yellow pigment and so essentially looks like a warm white. Google 'Justalittlebuild' - her kitchen / family room is Wimbourne White and it is gorgeous.

I was coming to suggest this. I am going to use to for my house after my refurb os done.

stepfordwifey · 25/10/2022 08:13

Wimborne White - just the tiniest touch of cream to give it warmth so it's not a cold brilliant white colour.
Great in a north facing room and so soft and warm in south facing.

100% this. I must have spent a fortune on test pots of “creamy whites” and these are the two which work in my house.

Thanks everyone! After literally dozens and dozens of testers, every make possible, we've settled on Dulux White Cotton. It's got to go round the whole house so fairly cheap in comparison to F & B plus needs to tone with the flooring - light brown laminate - which has lots of green in it strangely! White Cotton has a touch of grey/green which so far looks really nice, hallelujah! I won't tell you how long the search has been going on for ;) xx
