Does anyone who lives in Southampton know Burgess Rd in Bassett? Is it a busy road? Moving soon and looking at a house on there next week and image on google maps looks like its a busy one!! Don't mind a bit of traffic but not constant. Can anyone shed an light please?

Hiya. It is a very busy road. Quieter outside rush hours but always pretty busy.

It's busy all day. The Hill Lane end has the Common opposite and is a bit nicer residential, the other end is the University and lots of Student housing. Which end makes a difference for schools too.

sdaisy26 · 03/09/2017 13:59

Very busy. And not great school catchment either.

Avoid any pretty sounding flower roads too!

sdaisy26 · 03/09/2017 14:01

Where do you need to be / what are you looking for?

Consider highfield, portswood (parts of), st Denys, bitterne park (but choose carefully here, lots gets called 'bp' & is very definitely not!

Burgess road is very busy!

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 03/09/2017 14:05

v v busy and one end is v rough - i grew up there :)

AssumethePerpendicular · 03/09/2017 14:10

Very busy with lots of buses, shops, takeaways and students. The section between the avenue and hill lane is much nicer but is staionary traffic during rush hour. bottom end between avenue and swaythling not so much. I live round the corner from the bottom end.

AssumethePerpendicular · 03/09/2017 14:13

But it's not a bad or dangerous place, I feel safe walking and running around there.
Flowers named roads used to have a reputation 15 years ago but now not a problem.

Just whilst were still on the subject? What about Burridge or Swanwick, I've heard a rumour that it's nice over that way? Anyone know?

yh lovely - bit out in the sticks though

ElChan03 · 04/09/2017 19:33

Swanwick is well away from Southampton you're looking at a good 30 min drive, hour bus ride away. Lovely area but in the sticks in relation to Southampton city centre.

Burgess Rd is busy as others have said but it is in catchment for Cantell which is a good school (it wasn't 10 years ago) but since has had two marvellous and inspiration heads. Primary schools can be a different matter and it will depend exactly where on the road you are.

IssyStark · 04/09/2017 22:46

There are v nice places outside Soton but the commute is a bitch by car and often not possible by public transport (but that greatly varies). Depends where you need to get to and you need to get there for normal office hours.

To get an idea how bad Soton traffic can be, we live 1.3 miles from work. Even picking up a 5yo from Afterschool club, walking home is only 10m slower than driving as the route we are on is down Burgess Rd and out towards the M27 and A27. It frequently takes 30-45m to drive home on those days we've needed the car. Although shouldn't be any longer than 15-20m on a very good day. And about once a year there is complete gridlock and it takes 2h (or turning around, going into town to eat out and then trying again!).

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 04/09/2017 23:32

yy for commuting think london style speeds - our 8 mile commute used to take over an hour

rattlesnake · 05/09/2017 01:01

Out in the sticks might suit me more. Might have a look at Burridge...looks like there's a bit of life to the east of there..as in shops, cinema....Whiteley?
