Two tone kitchen?

What are people's views on two colour kitchens? Really like Howdens Burford Grey which is a subtle green but worried about TOO much green. Also like the Burford Ivory but worried it's a bit boring. So considering the green for the base units/peninsula, and ivory for the wall and tower units. The worktops will be oak block effect laminate.

Two tone is nice! Either dark base and light cupboards or different colour island.

Olecranon · 03/09/2017 12:25

I have dark purple on the bottom and white on the top. I love it. Shaker type kitchen.

YorkshireTea86 · 03/09/2017 12:43

What colour do you do tall units if you do light wall and dark base units?

Olecranon · 03/09/2017 16:12

My tall units were pull out larders around the oven so I made them all purple.

4yearsnosleep · 03/09/2017 16:23

Please can we have some pics of these purple cabinets? Grin

I didnt say I think they look bad but I do think they will date fast. However most kitchens are very telling of their installation date.
We are looking to buy a house right now and every single one has metro tiles and two tone kitchens, they look great.

Yes perhaps but does it matter given that kitchens will not be replaced every year?

another20 · 04/09/2017 08:59

I dont think that they will date fast. I think that all one colour will look dated....I think that this is one of the most interesting things to happen in kitchens - it is a new idea which allows loads of creativity and expression. Love the idea that you can have a crazy coloured island and paint it every few years. Like also the dark bases and light top cupboards which become invisible when same colour as the wall.
I think they also reflect traditional/historic kitchens which were unfitted and different materials or painted stand alone pieces eg large dresser.

Just seen a friends kitchen and she has done this a 3rd way - whole one wall (top and bottom cupboards) is a different from the others - all dark blue and the others a pale grey - looks amazing.

another20 · 04/09/2017 09:02

Also think that this allows you to overcome issues - eg dark corner - north facing etc.

BlondeWrites · 04/09/2017 11:43

I think it looks fab when done well - dark grey & light grey works beautifully, or, mid-grey and white. A friend of mine has navy doors on the lower cabinets and a really pale blue on the higher ones, it looks amazing. But her kitchen is massive and she's not short of a few bob, as my granny would say.

If you're worried about it looking dated, it's worth bearing in mind that it's not hard to just replace the cabinet doors, so if you do get sick of it after a few years, it wouldn't be too hard to make it one-tone again.

@4yearsnosleep I can't figure out how to add a photo using the app. I'll try and log in tomorrow to the full site.

Falconhoof1 · 04/09/2017 21:49

I meant has this worked! but looks like it has. My kitchen is pretty small but I love my new units

TeddyBee · 04/09/2017 21:52

I have one wall of gloss grey and then the rest are gloss white. I loved the dark grey (Ikea Abstrakt) but in a small kitchen, i thought it might be too gloomy.

NanooCov · 04/09/2017 22:02

Kitchen porn. Love it! So envious currently.

Bababing1 · 04/09/2017 23:27

We also considered this but in the end went for white units/doors but with the back panel of island painted azure blue (colour matched the feature wall paint). It looks fantastic and if we ever get bored of it, can repaint back panel (doubt that will ever happen!)
We don't have any wall units though.

Pipsqueak11 · 05/09/2017 00:04

we are revamping our kitchen as it is newly installed just before we moved in and great quality but dullish shaker style cream so we are planning on a new black granite worktop and grey slate floor tiles but would like to add a couple more wall units but in a different colour probably as we cant match the colour. does anyone have any idea on what may work or ideas on websites to look at for inspiration ?

fussychica · 05/09/2017 18:12

Have a very small u shaped north facing kitchen. Have gone for pale grey base units and tall units and white wall cabinets, all matt handleless. We chose two tone because a. It was interesting and b. It meant I could retain a fairly new fridge freezer and my beloved washing machine without them looking old/grubby next to a white unit. Our worktop is white/grey marble and the walls are painted in a colour called Brassica. We think it looks stunning.

4yearsnosleep · 05/09/2017 18:22

Thank you Falcon, it looks great!!!

OhWifey · 06/09/2017 15:27

Well we have decided. We've ordered soft green base units and Ivory wall and tall units. Can't wait

When is it being installed? Very exciting stuff.

FatBettyintheCoop · 06/09/2017 15:59

Sounds lovely OP. Hope the installation is fuss free.
We've got dark grey bottom half with pale grey top half and a bright purple farmhouse style Island unit (I painted it myself) with white (marble?) granite work tops.
It was done a couple of years ago now but I still love it. I've also painted all my dining chairs different colours. It's fairly open plan kitchen, dining, sunroom.
