Glass splashbacks or tiles?

DH and I can't find a tile we agree on for our kitchen. So I was wondering about doing glass splashbacks instead. Anyone got any pros and cons please?

We have had glass splash backs for 4 years and I love them. Easy to clean and you can get them in any colour. Also no grouting to discolour!

GrockleBocs · 01/09/2017 23:53

We went for glass. Expensive but very much worth it.

Another with glass and I love too!
No grouting to clean, only downside is the cost.

Another option is corian. We have corian worktops and the corian simply extends up the wall behind the hob and sink. It is expensive but we've been really pleased with it.

I can't decide myself, I'm inclined to go with colourful patchwork tiles for a bit of a bohemian look but I really like glass splashbacks too.

Middleoftheroad · 02/09/2017 08:16

we're doing our kitchen but would not consider tiles now glass splasbacks exist

WhichJob · 02/09/2017 08:38

Why not, Middle?

We have already ordered worktops so we can't have Corian. Do they get streaky?

Cleaning tiles is a pita. Glass imo looks nicer too

NotCitrus · 02/09/2017 10:17

Would love glass, didn't have the budget. Spent the budget on granite worktop with 15 cm upstands and haven't put any splashback in. Year on it's OK, may repaint next year.

How much are the glass splashbacks? Everyone keeps saying they are expensive but I naively thought it would be cheaper than tiles!

How do they do the window sill area that would normally be tiled?

I have ordered glass splash backs for kitchen and utility room. Easier to clean.
No idea about cost as included in the whole kitchen but I am aware tiling would have been cheaper.
Gone for standard on utility and Objects in Glass for main kitchen. Saw them at a show and fell in love with their guilded cork.

WhichJob · 02/09/2017 12:48

Sounds lovely, Quit. When is t getting installed?

Still having the room(s) finished.
Kitchen itself will start being installed on 2nd October but not sure when the glass splash backs arrive....
It all got very real 😳

4yearsnosleep · 02/09/2017 21:27

I'm hoping for glass, but I saw an acrylic version in a showroom the other day & may go for that the f the budget gets too tight

I dithered over this for ages when we got our new kitchen.

I do think glass splashbacks can look great and I'm sure they are really easy to clean and look after. However, we actually ended up going for tiles. Our kitchen cabinets are handleless with a gloss finish and when I looked at some similar kitchens in situ with a glass splashback it all just looked like too many flat, shiny surfaces to me. So we went with bevelled white metro tiles just to break up the smooth flatness a bit.

I'm glad we did, as I really like the way it looks, but it's just personal preference really - I know glass is more fashionable and lots of people really hate metro tiles though. When I mentioned that grout looks grubby really quickly, our kitchen designer suggested that we ask the tiler to use a silver-grey grout that matches our worktops, rather than a white one - so it won't look grubby quickly at all and again. I wasn't sure how it would look but I have to say that I really love it and I don't regret not choosing splashbacks.

Mum2KSS · 05/09/2017 17:26

We've gone for matching granite across the whole of the wall and that was cheaper than than the glass option...

LagoDiComo · 05/09/2017 17:54

I have gone with mosaic tiles except behind the hob where I am getting a glass splashback. Wasn't sure meshing the styles would work but think it will be fine. Only trouble is choosing a colour (tiles are grey and white so anything would go). Masses of tiles don't seem to be very in these days, we just have them two tiles high as if they were an upstand

Millybingbong · 05/09/2017 17:56

Where are people buying them? I've only seen wickes recently.

fussychica · 05/09/2017 18:00

I have a stainless steel custom made splashback just behind the hob and the rest painted beyond the worktop upstands. 3 years on both splashback and paint wearing well.
