New front door

We really need to replace our front door. At the moment it's pretty flimsy behind a rubbishy porch which needs knocking down.

I'd like to revert back to something like the original 1920s door and there are lovely options available from London door company, Cotswold Door Company etc but the quotations I've had from them have been astronomically expensive.

Does anyone have experience of buying a wood front door and getting a carpenter to fit it? I think we'd need a bespoke door as it's not standard size and the door frame needs replacing probably. Did you also need a locksmith to install, and overall what did the cost work out as?

All I want is a nice door which won't bankrupt me!

I can't offer any help I'm afraid but we would like to replace our hall door too. Do you mind giving a ballpark of some of the quotes that you were given? I've no idea what we're looking at price wise.

We want to do this. We got a quote from a joiner - £2,600 for new door and frame. We'd have to choose glass (and that would have been extra on top). We've left it for now - it's a lot of money to pay for a door but I detest our current one.

Cotswold quoted £4000 to replace the door and frame!

At the moment I'm looking into buying one from these guys bespokedoor.co.uk/ and then having a carpenter fit one.

Does anyone have experience of a carpenter fitting your door and replacing a door frame? Anyone bought a reclaimed one? They are cheaper but I'm worried about sturdiness!

They're nice. Still £915 for the door I'd probably go for.

4k Shock
Holy shit!

hahaha

What size is your door? There are quite a lot of standard sizes off the shelf.

I just looked up some factory-made doors. This might not be the style you want, but £430 retail seems more reasonable. To the left of the "how to buy" blob are the sizes this one comes in. A local joinery works would cost more but may be better.

Although quoted in mm, UK doors are really made in inches. External doors are (in order of popularity) sold in 32", 30", 28" and 36" widths, and a few heights, around 80" or 78". You will probably need a new doorframe as well. Hardwood doorframes are not expensive.

Find your carpenter first, he will know local suppliers of doors.

Thanks! Have found a very helpful carpenter and a good door which suits what we want.

We paid £3000 this year for a metal security door, cemented metal frame and a new window at the side with security glass.

There is a wide range of doors which are suitable for any style of house and obviously you don't have to have the window but we needed a new one anyway.

Most of the neighbouring houses have had these doors when replacing them or when the houses are remodelled. We were originally going to get a wooden one but not too far from us there has been a spate of doors being kicked in and ours also has a 5 bar security lock. I am pretty sure we couldn't have got a more secure door.

The old door was rotten, lots of filler and a wobbly lock and I never felt safe. Then this time last year someone tried the fishing through the letterbox trick for keys or looking to see what was inside and that was it, off we went to buy a new door.

If you are going to be spending a fair amount it is worth getting a really good door, and peace of mind.
