Do you have Corian worktops?

Hi all

I am thinking of replacing my kitchen worktops with Corian. Does anyone have this? Is it easily stained? Are there better alternatives? I need to replace my high maintenance worktops!

Also, I just want the worktops changed and not the rest of the kitchen. Does anyone know of a supplier in London who will fit worktops only?

Thanks in advance!

We have Tristone which is the same thing made by someone other than DuPont. I think these kinds of acrylic composites are great for seamless shapes. Dark colours show marks and scratches far more than light. If it gets really scratched it can be repolished. There are companies who just do composite and solid surface worktops. Many of them are based in West Yorkshire and will travel!

Btw we had a disaster with Corian that got damaged on it's way to us. The repairs showed up other flaws and it went from bad to worse. In the end we rejected it, got our money back and got the Tristone from a different supplier.

Mistral is another less eye-watering expensive option.

We were at a kitchen showroom recently and I have to say the corian was astonishing. Looked like it was carved from one piece but actually it had many joins. I couldn't see or feel them.

Fleurchamp · 31/08/2017 14:20

We have corian worktops. Like the pp says coloured versions show up scratches more than white.
We have a corian sink too (in white). A bit of bleach in the sink brings it up like new. I use bar keepers friend on the rest and it lifts any marks instantly.
I will try to find out who fitted ours.

wowfudge · 31/08/2017 14:22

We nearly had Mistral but we're advised against it as there would have been a join at the edge of a supporting cabinet and it is very heavy stuff.

Theseaweed · 31/08/2017 14:25

We have it and although I do like it, we have lots of water rings etc. Would love to know how to get rid of them. Bleach does bring the white sink up really well..

Landy10 · 31/08/2017 14:26

We have Corian. I love it. Like above we have the white sink and it's so easy to look like new with a little spray of flash. I make sure I don't put really hot stuff on it. No stains and mine is grey (quite light).

Whatthefoxgoingon · 31/08/2017 14:26

Thank you very much! I'm going for white, I might even try to replace a marble bathroom vanity top if it's suitable. The marble did not hold up well!

Please do tell me your recommended suppliers of corian/tristone/mistral, even if far away if they are willing to travel to London. Smile

We're using Roktops who are Berkshire based and do lots in London

myrtleWilson · 31/08/2017 23:48

We had Corian worktops and sink in our last house and loved them (and the corian chopping board that came with the worktops!) Would like to upgrade to it again in new house at some point

look at their 10/15 page discalmer on their site.
the good one is about not putting boiling water in the sink
its a good read
And is sold with a repair kit - alarm bells???

wowfudge · 01/09/2017 07:06

Pretty sure this repair kit is some Barkeeper's Friend and a cloth.

SweepTheHalls · 01/09/2017 07:08

We have Silestone. It's amazing, been in for a year, and looks as perfect as the day it was installed.

PlausibleSuit · 01/09/2017 07:18

I have it. It's white. I don't know who supplied it because it was specified and fitted by the owner (we rent). YY the 'repair kit' is Barkeeper's Friend and a microfibre cloth in a little case.

It's OK although I preferred the granite I had in my last rented place. It does stain easily but Barkeeper's Friend usually lifts it off. (Method and the like do not.) You can't put hot things on it.

What is odd about it is that it wears, sort of. It's now 18 months old and it's gone slightly shiny where I wipe it a lot. That lovely smooth matte texture has worn off in places. I think it can be buffed back to a perfect finish but you have to get someone in, or use a special tool, or something.

Chewbecca · 01/09/2017 08:15

Why has granite gone down in popularity and corian up? With granite there is no staining or ring marks & you can put pans on it straight from the oven/hob.

Fleurchamp · 01/09/2017 08:44

For us, corian fitted the bill because to get to our kitchen you have to navigate a narrow staircase. Corian was simple to fit as it can be brought in small pieces and blended together. There is no way to tell the joins in ours.

Tbh I am not overly impressed with it. I do like having the sink moulded into the work top though as there is no ledge/ gap for dirt to accumulate.

wowfudge · 01/09/2017 09:54

@Chewbecca - has it? How do you know? Composite worktops are available in more and consistent colours and can be made into all kinds of shapes without visible joins.

Thanks v much HideHide!

Thanks all for your opinions. Will do a bit more research before committing.

@wowfudge I don't have any evidence but just judging by friend's choices & on this board I would say granite is declining in popularity and corian and similar increasing. I wondered why. I didn't know about the joins thing which is definitely a bonus.
