Mortgage with poor credit?

Hello!
I'm just looking for some advice for the future really about buying my first home.
My credit on clear score is 'steady' however I do have 1 default showing (it's to do with an ex not paying the bills in our joint names despite telling me he was) which is currently in the process of being sorted out.

My partner however has very bad credit from being 'young and dumb' with money! He has a CCJ on his file (wrongly, from council tax which he has proof of paying but they won't remove it and are being complete nightmares) and defaults from a credit card which he used to pay his mums £1200 debt off to a bailiff who turned up at her house whilst he was visiting.
These problems are explainable and are generally from not being clever with money, however will this have an impact when we eventually buy our own home?
I know they disappear after 6 years but we would like to buy within 4 really, if this is out of the question obviously we'd just have to wait.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Thank you in advance!

When did default occur and is it now settled? What % of credit available are you using and have you examples of good credit use e.g. Paying off CC in full each month?

Go see a broker - you will get a mortgage but whether the amount or rate are suitable is another matter entirely!

Thank you pestov!
The default occurred last year and is in the works of being sorted out (just sorting the direct debit amount out)
I don't have an overdraft or any credit cards, the only credit I have is my car finance which is paid monthly on time and have never missed a payment.

Thank you for the advice!

I had a CCJ and was always in my overdraft. Terrible with money.
The CCJ only lasts 5 years officially but was probably more like 7 before if stopped showing up on any credit checks.
I got out of my overdraft, and closed all
My credit accounts apart from a credit card that I used and paid off every month.
Took about at year but my credit score went up to excellent. 980/999 or something.
And this year I did get a mortgage.
So it is possible but takes time!
