Kitchen ladders and other stuff!

When you plan a kitchen and everyone says figure out where things will go, how do you know how much you'll fit in things like wide pan drawers if you've never had them?!
We're planning on having a 400 deep larder and then using Ikea drawers in it but will 400 wide be enough or do I go 600 wide? ( bit more expensive for both the larder and drawers!)
At the minute all of our food goes in one 1000 wide and one 500 wide wall unit. New plan has 2 800 wide pan drawers and an 800 wide wall unit plus this larder.
Anyone with any insight into how much you can fit into things like this would be much appreciated!

Obviously should be kitchen larder! Stupid autocorrect!

I was agog to know what a kitchen ladder was.

:o

wider is better, preferably with a pair or doors opening right and left rather than one huge one you have to walk round.

Pan drawers 1000mm wide are preferable to 500mm or 600mm ones

If you have a tall larder unit you can get pull-down shelves like £137 at B&Q

I'm of the opinion that wide, shallow cupboards are better than deep ones, as you will lose things at the back.

But how do I know if I'll have enough storage? Given the tiny amount we have now I'm struggling to estimate how much storage the new cupboards will give us. I can't find pictures of the Ikea larders (40 x37) with food in it so I can't really visualize it.
I think it will mainly have baking stuff (flour, sugar etc) and crisps, sweets etc out of the kids reach!
The kitchen is so small at the minute we only have 4 base units, one of which is under the sink, another is drawers but not pan drawers. So nearly everything food and crockery wise is in 3 double wall units and 2 single. New kitchen has nearly the same amount of wall units plus triple the base units and then the larder! So I think a 40 wide larder would be enough, but will I accumulate more stuff as the kids (6 + 4) grow and then regret not getting the larder wide enough!

if I'd known how good pan drawers are, I'd have had more.

It is easier to reach into a wide cab and pull things out.

You will never have enough storage.

Architects say, if you give people storage, all they do is put things in it.

Pan drawers hold loads. We only have one set (60 wide) which have had a couple of different uses. Currently one of them holds our full set of crockery - dinner plates (blooming huge ones), side plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls (also very big) all fit in one drawer, with their own separate pile for each stack.

The other drawer at the moment has a couple of bigger pans (Circulon stockpot size) plus a stack of casserole dishes and oven trays, but previously it had:
-Circulon stockpot
-circulon chefs pan
-4 saucepans of different sizes (I think it was 14, 16, 18 and 20cm but I'm not 100% sure) plus their lids

If we could have more, we would - our layout doesn't lend itself to more drawers though, too many corners!

the best in-kitchen larder unit I have seen is this one. You can open the doors and step inside. IIRC is is 1000mm each way on the corner walls, and the double doors are two at 400mm each.

this example is in Wickes but I think Howdens and others sell the same range.

Thanks statistically that helps. We will actually have 4 800 wide pan drawers and 3 600 in the whole of the kitchen, but the others are for crockery, pans and oven trays.
I have seen those larders PigletJ but unfortunately have nowhere to put one. I think I'm going to go 600 wide, it's only about £45 more for the larder itself. Each drawer is about £10 more but as we are getting them from Ikea and it's only half an hour away I can pick them up later if we need to save a bit! Think I will regret going for the narrow one in the future if I am struggling for storage.
