Untidy house next door

Found a house we like but the house next door (terrace ) is an absolute eyesore. Rubbish out the front constantly, filthy net curtains, cracked windows. Owner obviously doesn't look after it. Would it put you off ? This is a pricey seafront road and I love the house but worried about who might live next door !

Is it elderly people? In which case it'll be quiet, at least.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/08/2017 23:32

But to your point. We didnt take further our interest in a lovely house when we saw the next doors garden from one of the upstairs bedrooms. It looked like the beginnings of a swimming pool or a suspended garden of sorts. Bizarre. It did put us off.

maudeismyfavouritepony · 24/08/2017 23:39

Could you ask the owners or the Estate Agent if anybody lives there? if elderly it might not be like that forever, (sorry) if abandoned, who knows how long it'll be like that.

TheTeaFairy · 25/08/2017 05:24

Wondering whether you're looking at a house I viewed Oldboiler... is it in a SW town? Nosy

If it's the same property, it's fab Smile

It would put me off, and did this week! Listed semi early 19th century town house. The house next door looked fine on the photos but very run down in the flesh. I had thought - oh, they are listed, fine, at least the next door house will always 'match'.

All the blinds were drawn and they were full of cigarette burns, they had strewn a few things over the boundary fence, no idea why, things like a knackered old rug. There was rubbish in the garden.

I don't want to spend £££££ to live next to something like that. It could improve .... or not.

oldboiler · 25/08/2017 08:48

tea fairy it's in Southend on Sea?

The thing is, you can't predict it at all. We brought a house, the next door garden was kept beautifully and a gardener visited every week. The lady sold the house 18m later and the next owner let it go wild and we had creepers climbing the fences.

HollyBuckets · 25/08/2017 09:20

Ha ha ha! It could be my house! I'm in a resort town. We've spent several years on various renovations - we've practically rebuilt the house from the inside and frankly, money ran out before we could do the front garden. But if you bought next to me my house certainly wouldn't devalue yours. We've doubled its value through renovation.

QueenBeet · 25/08/2017 10:26

Oh god, I hope it's not my house... The garden is being renovated and we're really nice neighbours, I promise, we just don't keep up to speed with maintenance !
You're not looking for the house next door to this one are you ?! www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-61204183.html (Southend on Sea, I notice)

oldboiler · 25/08/2017 10:44

No not that one! It's nearer southchurch park - seafront. House we are looking at it lovely and tidy but the one next door not so much Hmm

OP posts:
QueenBeet · 25/08/2017 10:53

Southchurch area is lovely but some of the houses are owned by people who have been there for years, so it probably is elderly neighbours who live in your next door place, in which case...sorry, but they might not be a problem for long ! I say go for it !

oldboiler · 25/08/2017 11:00

Do you know the area well ? House is around the 650 mark so not cheap. But nicely presented - 3 storey townhouse with seaviews and a balcony . Sound ok price wise?

Chewbecca · 25/08/2017 11:39

I think I know the house you're looking at, on Eastern Esplanade? Are you moving from out of the area?

On the downside - it is pretty close to a not so nice area (Kursaal) & on a very busy road.

Are school catchments important to you? It is Thorpe Greenways catchment for primary which is a nice school. Senior is Futures which is a poor school. If your children are academic, they may get into the grammars in which case it doesn't matter but I would want a plan B for if they don't pass the 11+.

To answer your specific question, untidy neighbours would depend if it was untidy because they're old and infirm (not so bad) or untidy because they don't care, which may indicate noise.

Most families with your budget would opt for closer to Thorpe Bay station or Leigh/Chalkwell. But you wouldn't get the seafront location then. It depends on your priorities re: views/house vs 'naice' location.

Elllicam · 25/08/2017 11:42

It would put me off, we viewed a house recently with a really untidy looking neighbour. We couldn't buy it, it would have niggled at me.

Chewbecca · 25/08/2017 11:54

Oh, the scruffy house (green one?) also looks like it is sub divided into flats.

oldboiler · 25/08/2017 12:07

Chewbacca yes the green one! You know it then. Terrible isn't it ? Really like the house though so I'm torn as wanted a seafront house for ages Confused

OP posts:
QueenBeet · 25/08/2017 13:16

Yeah, I have to agree - if I had 650K I would be looking at Thorpe Bay, maybe a road leading to the sea but not on the seafront. The Kursaal area can be a bit rough, and the traffic on the main beach road can be noisy and they have car races on Saturday nights quite often.

JoJoSM2 · 25/08/2017 15:45

Don't know the area but I'd be definitely put off, especially if it's flat. People might be old or not have much money but nothing excuses filthy curtains or permanent rubbish out the front. Gross.
