This is still a tiny bit rough round the edges but I'd love to hear any thoughts. Run of units along the back wall goes: larder, fridge, cooker, shallow storage unit. Bin is in the island. The tall unit on the right is where the boiler is. The blank wall to the left is actually French doors out to the garden.

Oven needs to be higher up and I'd lose thr tall cupboard on right to let more light in, also not sure about. The corner....

user1469117700 · 24/08/2017 18:09

How will the dors on the tall bank open?
align the 2 larders doors up with the fridge

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 24/08/2017 18:15

I have a cupboard in exactly the same position as your open shelves.
It's a pain to get anything out of unless it's at the front of the bottom shelf .
Middle and top shelves require kitchen chair to be stood on. (I'm 5ft 6)

willdoitinaminute · 24/08/2017 18:42

Disagree about oven height, it looks fine to me. We have double oven at a high level and it is really difficult lifting large casseroles into it with a much higher risk of tipping hot foods over yourself.
I would have the sink on the island and hob by the window. Less likely to knock pans off the hob. I have never understood why kitchen designers ( usually men) insist on putting sinks under windows when most of us no longer spend all our time washing up, and if you have a dishwasher you don't need a sink drainer just a nice big sink. If it's on the island you can access from at least two sides so two people can use it at the same time.
Forget the magic triangle is a load of rubbish in a modern kitchen. I threw out the rule book when I had my kitchen refitted and it is so much easier to use than the original. Also, absolute must, put your dishwasher directly under the crockery cupboard.

HeatedCatFurniture · 24/08/2017 19:56

Thanks all.

I also thought re oven height that worktop height for the bottom one was standard? I don't like the idea of lifting things out from above eye level (I'm 5'7) but yes, it could definitely move up a bit.

Agree about the larder/F/F height.

We've been through the issue of how things will open with the designer and there is a solution - I just can't remember what it is right now Blush

Plan for the open shelves is they'll have things on them that are seldom used but look nice, eg pestle and mortar Grin The coffee machine will live on the counter under the open shelves.

The dishwasher will be to the left of the sink, so directly next to the tall
shallow unit where majority of plates/glasses etc will live. We must check that the DW and cupboard doors will be able to be open at the same time though.

The tall cupboard to the right of the sink is there because the boiler is there. Alternative would be having a wall cupboard over the boiler, but I think this actually creates more useful space.

I'm not worried about light because there will be a massive fuck-off roof light in above the left hand side of the island.

I definitely don't want the sink on the island. My rationale is that one spends more time cooking and chopping, and therefore want to do that facing the room. We don't have DC so not worried about pans being pulled off it.

I'm mildly obsessed with symmetry so I couldn't be doing with all the odd lines on the tall units.

How will you reach the ones on the top left of the oven?

PissedOffNeighbour · 24/08/2017 22:07

How big is it?

Puffpaw · 24/08/2017 22:10

I don't like The Corner tbh I find it very jarring.

Puffpaw · 24/08/2017 22:11

Agree also that ovens are better at chest height.

highinthesky · 24/08/2017 22:16

It's great that everything will be tucked out of sight on cupboards, but this is always at the expense of worktop space. I don't think you have enough, even with the island.

HeatedCatFurniture · 24/08/2017 22:32

Yeah, the corner is a nightmare. There is an old chimney breast that sticks out. So the units where the FF, oven etc are are 60cm deep, then there's a single unit that's 30cm deep, and then the worktop where the sink is. Because of that, it's almost impossible to work anything into the corner while keeping the DW where the plates etc will be. So we're currently sucking up about 30x60cm of dead space there. Also nothing in our house is at a right angle, which makes it all a bit harder!

Size-wise the island is 2mx1.2m, which gives you an idea of the scale of the rest of it.

I think I'd continue the wall units into the corner where the shelves are- if it's to display things why not a glass fronted cabinet with lights in it. Maybe even a diagonal front/corner cupboard style or even shelves still but diagonal

Ttbb · 24/08/2017 23:01

It really annoys me that the edge of the island doesn't line up with the cabinets behind it. Also, why have you left that counter space in the corner? It will be very hard to reach those shelves above. Are you planning on putting a juicer or something there? Otherwise that counter space is completely unusable.

PickAChew · 24/08/2017 23:05

Oven right next to fridge isn't ideal.

HeatedCatFurniture · 25/08/2017 09:37

Oven next to fridge not ideal I know but there is no other way to do that unfortunately.

Shelves aren't deep - only 30cm. I've just checked and it's only the top one that will be impossible to reach without steps.

Counter space under shelves will have the coffee machine on it.

There is a beam that will line up with the edge of the island.

I don't think you would be able to put anything away in the shallow larder when you have the dishwasher open if I'm honest. You'd have to be stretching over the dishwasher or around the corner or the cupboard. What about getting rid of the shallow larder and just having a slim base unit there, makes corner more accessible and would give you a bit more worktop. Put the fridge on the far left of the tall bank of units, double larder next then oven, use part of the big larder for plates etc or if you have pan drawers that side of the larder put them in there, it's still close to the dishwasher when it's open.

wowfudge · 25/08/2017 15:32

I agree with Yorkshire about putting the larder between the fridge and the oven and just having a base unit in the awkward corner.

NotMeNoNo · 25/08/2017 19:54

I think you are close but the corner isn't ideal.
You dont have to have units around the corner. If you had a straight run ending in crockery drawers it would all be accessible. I would put your boiler in a wall unit TBH and have more space by sink.

Then three decent tall units including an 80cm pantry with inner drawers you have fewer units but they all are efficiently used.

IMO the oven height is ok, you can bend but you can't grow! Stacked ovens are often set too high to teach the top one.

NotMeNoNo · 25/08/2017 19:59

REACH!

HeatedCatFurniture · 25/08/2017 23:41

Thanks so much all - we've seen the comments today but not looked in detail. So much food for thought Flowers
