What should I do about lawn edging? Stones or metal edging?

Garden's being done up and we're having a new lawn put in.

I can't decide whether to use cobble setts around it, which will be cemented in, and would look like this

Or to use a metal edging which would look like this

Is one easier to mow than the other?
Does one keep the boundaries better?

I don't particularly like the look of the stone, it's just an extra layer of stuff to look at.

Opinions welcome Smile

Thank you so much for your post Mary.
I can't help with your dilemma but you've just solved mine!
I've been looking for weeks for the right thing to solve my edging problem and you have just handed it to me.
Many thanks.

Is the metal affected by strumming, etc? I.e. does it mark? I like the setts. More natural in a garden.

wowfudge · 23/08/2017 07:50

Strimming not strumming!

notarehearsal · 23/08/2017 07:55

I like the cobbles.

You will probably get more response if you put this is gardening too

Prefer the stone

I'm going for the first one. It'll keep the soil and lawn separate and have a wide mow-over edge.

PicklingGherkins · 23/08/2017 08:04

Watching with interest as we're looking at edging too. I quite like the old fashioned terracotta rope top edging but it's quite pricy (even the replica stuff).

CanIBuffalo · 23/08/2017 08:04

I've just spend hours and hours hand weeding grass that had crept from the lawn into my border and cba to do that again.

BitchyInnerMonologue · 23/08/2017 08:06

Metal shreds if you strim it.

CanIBuffalo · 23/08/2017 08:07

I have v old rope border and unless you're prepared to strim or cut the grass where it butts up to the rope, it soon disappears. On a lawn with a lot of border, it's a fussy job.
It does look lovely though.

I have everedge and it's fantastic. But I wanted a crisp edge rather than a decorative one. It doesn;t mark because it's sunk to the level of the grass, you just mow over the edge of it slightly. Highly recommended if that's the look you want. Also you can install it yourself and rip it out and reuse it if you move the bed/shrink the grass area. I am very very happy with mine indeed.

We have some of the Everedge and it is a very high quality product. It's very thick metal and strong. It hasn't become shredded by mowing or strimming. It's great for relatively straight lines and it's pretty invisible.

Ours is used to edge a gravel border drain alongside decking though. I havent used it around our flower beds.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 23/08/2017 21:47

Thanks all.

I've made a deciison and it's a third option Grin but it's useful to have these comments. We've gone for a polypropolene version of the Everedge so it's interesting to see the comment about shredding / strimming, I wonder if that will be more of a problem. But I do like the idea of not really being able to see the edging. We'll just have to see what it's like in practice, it was half the price of the metal.

I like the rope edging but it's not the right style for the garden we're after.

I think you may find it's a false economy to buy a plastic edge.
It with weather badly and probably split in a year or two.
I would go for the superior product and pay once.

ihatethecold · 23/08/2017 21:55

Will not with.
