I complete next week and am trying to pack. Combined with this my dog has decided to lose the plot, barking more than normal, chewing boxes and just being more daft.

I'm guessing pets suss that something is up - has anyone else found that their pets have started to act weird when they're getting ready to move.

Also any tips for moving with a dog? Nobody can have him on the day so he'll have to stay with us. Will anything help him settle into his new surroundings quicker?

A crate might be a good idea if you have one or could borrow one, he could watch and not feel too stressed, while not getting underfoot.

My cat used to sit on my lap at the same time every day. The day we left, there were no seats so I sat on the edge of the fireplace to check e.mails. He calmly wandered over and climbed on my lap, having taken no notice of the lack of belongings. The next time we moved he was crated in case we lost him.

I would also add, yes they do notice, dogs tend to want to 'help' in my experience, hence the crate suggestion.

We gained a cat because she would escape and hide if things were happening so the people had just moved and left her outside, never bothered to go back for her.

I have a cat too but he wont come inside our house. Its been an ongoing situation since we got the dog. (Made worse when builders came and let the dog chase him)
I really dont think the cat will come with us but our neighbour has offered to take him.
I feel so sad about it but think it might be the best thing to do

When my DP moved last he boxed the cat in the morning an hour before he had to leave. Then drove over to new City (2 hours ish) during which she cried the entire way. When he got here the old owners were still packing! He just had to wait around!
She spent 9 hours in her box poor thing and is now properly afraid of it, so going to the vet is a nightmare!
Sorry that's not very helpful, but felt I needed to share it.

We did a 12 hr drive with a very vocal cat - our vet's advice was that they do cope well with being in a travel crate for extended periods.

If you're moving locally, can the dog go to kennels for a couple of days?
