Do you think this is big enough to have a sofa and coffee table in as well as the kitchen and dining table?

That will end up feeling very cramped. I would just stick with a di big table for now, if you feel the need you could maybe try an armchair.

namechangedtoday15 · 20/08/2017 12:43

Yes absolutely. 9m is very long. You'll have to be clever with layout as 3m is quite narrow but yes.

Mrsladybirdface · 20/08/2017 13:22

We have a 9 x 3 living room dining room, I think it's plenty big enough. As above you'd need to be clever with the kitchen space by either having an L shaped kitchen or having perpendicular type island

Potentialpoochowner · 20/08/2017 14:57

Thanks for the feedback. Haven't completed yet so hard to envisage things. Will also need to knock a wall down (is separate dining room at the mo). Yes, 3m is quite narrow isn't it....

Get on the Ikea planner. We got all that except the coffee table in 6x3m. We had a L of units, no room really for island, table parallel to wall, then sofa at other end. Will you have daylight in such a long room?

mayhew · 20/08/2017 16:50

That's similar to mine. I have a "c" shape of a kitchen at the top. Extending Table in the middle and sofa at the end. The back where the units are is dark but fine with good lights.

mayhew · 20/08/2017 16:55

Two pics, top end. C shape chosen to break up long narrow space. Other end windows (we added side window )increase space.

Yes it should be fine. Like mayhew a C shaped kitchen at one end, table in the middle & living area at the other end.

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/08/2017 11:18

Totally doable. Ours is two separate rooms - living dining with kitchen behind - but would be pretty much those dimensions. We don't have a coffee table but have everything else.

Look at sofa dimensions carefully - lots of sofas are huge with massive arms and it makes a big difference.

Potentialpoochowner · 21/08/2017 19:13

Thanks for all feedback! Looks like with careful planning and right furniture it's doable. Do you think a dining table could go sideways rather than length ways? Think it's 1.8 meters in length (seats six but there's usually only three of us).

That would only leave 60cm from edge of table to wall either side. It is recommended that you need 76cm from edge of table to wall to allow people to take their seat but it will be tight if people get up during the meal. An ideal distance is 1.22m which allows movement to/from table comfortably.
I know somebody who has a similar size extension like this:

On a day to day basis I'd have the table against the wall opposite the door, lengthways, so you'd have 120cm as the passageway between kitchen and lounge area.

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/08/2017 20:36

I'd say it would be too tight. Unextended our table is 1.4m and it does go across the room but it's off centre with one end of it against the wall (the door to our kitchen is at one side of the wall between the two), so there's plenty of room to move around.

We pull it out (and extend it) at christmas etc but it would be too big day to day.

I'd consider a different table as I think a 1.8m table running down the room might make the room feel really long and thin. Maybe a round table would work?

McCheck · 20/12/2024 16:34

what did you decide in the end OP? Would love to hear what people think.

Asking because we have a similar long rectangular floor plan but considering a side return extension.

Jolowmi · 20/12/2024 17:04

Loads of new builds have these exact dimensions, have a look at Barratt or Persimmon home developments near you as you may be able to visit a showhome or watch videos of the space online, or even look on Rightmove for those developments as you will be able to see people's real life furniture and designs.

The ones we saw when we were property hunting had the layout another pp has suggested above, u shaped kitchen, table in the middle and small lounge area at the end.

Papyrophile · 22/12/2024 17:55

My kitchen and entrance is longer (no wider) but there's no room for a sofa, mainly because it's open plan with lots of windows and doors. Our snuggly space is in the living room, which has three sofas and the wood burner. Disclaimer, we're in the country not a city, and off-grid for gas.

BackyardDreamer · 22/12/2024 22:33

If you put the table that way, could you leave off the seats from the end? Eg if there could be three seats each side of the long edge, or only two and bring out the extras if needed.
