Bloody creaky floorboards

We have varnished bare floorboards in the hall upstairs. They are extremely creaky, sometimes it sounds like I might break one (although I know I won't, just the sound they make). The floor is only about 10 years old, and the boards look sound, no rot or anything visible. The creaking drives me mad though! Trying to creep anywhere while the baby sleeps or if I want to visit the fridge at night is a nightmare. Can I do anything? Would a carpet fix it?

Sympathies, the stairs in our old house were squeaky fuckers. I think carpet will muffle it a bit, but it won't fix it.
It usually means the boards need to be refixed/nailed down. The squeak is caused by the movement. For the stairs I used to go under & hammer in the wedges every so often.
I think you should be able to do this yourself, although you might not want to.
Good luck.

We have floors upstairs like that too, less than 5 years old.
But we have a lovely fitted carpet and underlay down and I am reluctant to take it all up to re-nail the floorboards if that won't do the trick.

It drives me insane tho, if dh sleeps upstairs when he gets in from work really late it wakes me up - squeak creak squeak!

We have floorboards like this in all the upstairs bedrooms. It's a nightmare when I'm rocking dd to sleep. I saw a hack that if you put talc down and brush in between the floorboards it stops it creaking. Haven't tried it yet but could be worth a try?

I'll try anything! I was going to get someone out to look at them, but I have a feeling they'll just say the whole floor needs replaced. That would be very annoying as it's a nice floor and only 10 years old. When I think of the 150 year old house I lived in which had perfect original floorboards, my crabbit old git hat goes on, and I think that nothing is made the way it used to be!

Screw them down.

What DancingLedge says.

Before new carpet and underlay put down, I hored a carpenter/handyman at £15 per hour to go round and screw down creaky floorboards. Money well spent. No screwing through pipes accidentally and most of annoying squeaks gone.

I had this problem and had a carpenter for the day and he screwed them all down. Peace at last!
