British Gas for new boiler?

Hi,
Nasty shock on return from holiday. Switched hot water on and leak through ceiling/ overflow etc from small tank thing under main water tank in loft.
Well BG been out today and as boiler on 'reduced' parts can choose between new boiler and flush out of radiators or just flush out and hope for the best re boiler. Have quote for boiler Monday afternoon. About 700 quid for flush out. We are sludgy it seems pipe wise and have a 'blockage'. Using emersion heater now for hot water/ switching on and off on plug.
So- do we stick with BG? Aware won't be cheapest but on their homecare package [excess 50 quid each time]. Also do zero % interest for two years. We are diy duds.
Just so fed up but clearly need to do something. No work is not an option.
Thanks in advance.

Homecare for the first year is a massive rip off - what does it say about the quality of their work if they think you need Homecare straight after installation? Either they do a crap job or it's a useless freebie.

We are replacing our 30 year old boiler in our 3 bed semi. Boiler will cost around £800 for a Viessman (we are supplying ourselves) and labour just over £1k. It's a simple remove and replace job, slightly different than normal as we are on LPG not mains gas. We are Cambridgeshire.

Are you thinking of using BG PrimalLass?

Yes, verypuny. Guessing free Homecare bit only covers boiler as well.
Mmm.

BGas and HomecRe are a load of crap,, try local
!!

The other option is to have flush out of radiators and see how long boiler lasts. [BG say restricted parts but works fine at moment].
Delay boiler decision. Also would need to get another quote for that job.
Have conventional boiler at present Ideal Classic. Next decision would be like with like or combi boiler. Aghhh- hate all this...

My bil is a gas engineer. He advised my friend (not local to them) to go to a plumbers merchant locally & ask who was good if you can't get any local recommendations. They tend to know everyone who works locally so will know who to avoid/the good ones.

I should also say bg recommended power flush of our radiators when ds was a baby. He's about to start school. Local chap put a magnatec in (said power flushing has mixed results). My boiler is on reduced parts. (House and boiler are 21 now). Magnatec was one of the best things I ever bought. System is also hotter on lower setting and quiet again (was getting a bit rattly). Still discussing a new boiler when the time comes... Worth a conversation? X

Get a local heating engineer to look at it. MIL was told by BG at her annual service last autumn, that her boiler was 'unrepairable' and she would need a new boiler at around £6000. She contacted a local, well respected heating engineer who looked at it, told her it WAS repairable, although he would need to get the correct part. One week later, new part fitted and boiler had been working fine ever since. We've recently used the same crap for a boiler related problem and he had ours up and running again within half an hour. He's also told us that despite its age, with regular servicing, it's got a good few years left in it.

Definitely ask friends/neighbours/family for recommendations and get a couple of quotes if a new boiler is needed.

Get a bank loan and fund a local gas engineer
Ask in the local pub or on Facebook for recommendations
Don't go with British gas they are extortionately priced
You can even buy your own boluet if you research it which will cut costs, then you just need to pay the plumber after the job has been done

Thanks all. Really thinking about this.
BG may seem easiest option as with them already but being ripped off not fun.

As you are in Cambridge area, I recommend you contact M&M heating (based in Impington). They have done lots of work for me including a boiler replacement.

Thanks Carrot...
Looking at link.

Will get loads of family advice today as seeing whole gang. Will be mixed I know. Parents had recent work by BG. Worked out well for them as the initial quote had to be stuck to even though big issues found and much bigger job than quote implied. My siblings [of which I have a few] will balance them out as more savvy than me.
Might ask neighbour if he is free when BG come round and do quote. Know sounds wimpy but I may need back up to not fold and be total wimp.
I am generally not a wimp but when diy/ cars/ maintenance of any sort salesmen see me coming...

Well, cancelled BG appt tomorrow as realised was for an hour and a half and I am simply not ready for that. Would have been to assess house/ options/ finance etc. Waiting for BG deblocking/ power flush quote through post and emailing friends for advice re local people to use if decide BG just too damn expensive. Clearly need to do something before winter sets in.
Hate all this.

Have emailed couple of local firms.
Going to go for unblocking/ desludging only we think. [Know new boiler on cards but loath to change it when caused us no problems- famous last words].
Have distinct impression, this maybe beginning of end of our relationship with BG....
Thanks all for your advice- I have taken it.
