return of rental deposit

We moved out of our rented flat on Monday 31st July and attended the check out appointment. As of today (so nearly 2 weeks later) we have had no communication from the letting agent regarding returning our deposit.

I rang up one week ago and was told that people were off but they would get round to it ASAP and let us know. On the phone she told me of two things (minor) found on the checkout report so they have had access to that for plenty of times. Since then we have had nothing. When I moved from my previous flat into this one, I received the email regarding my deposit the next day so it's frustrating that 2 weeks later we still have no idea how much money we will get back.

Is there anything I can do?

If it is in a protected scheme (such as the DPS) then you should have been sent a tenant's access to the website and a code to request repayment at the start of the tenancy. Have you been online? It is possible that it is all there just waiting for you to fill in the details of the account you want it paid to.

I gave my bank account details at the checkout appointment for repayment.

Will ask my roommate about the protection scheme- I took over tenancy from someone else so I paid my share of the deposit to her to cover what she'd paid into the scheme, if that makes sense.

Yes there should be documents with all of your details ,login etc for the deposit protection scheme on it.

You can log in and see what's happening with it .

If your deposit is held in a scheme you can log in and request the full amount. They need to respond within 30 days. You can also enter your bank details on there.

DONT wait for the agent to get their shit together.

.....mmm

If you paid your deposit to the previous tenant - irregular- it will not be protected. Any refund will go to whoever paid the agent in the first place.

I you want to raise a query with the deposit protection agency, do it within 3 months.

When we moved out of our last place it took over 3 months to get all the deposit back, the letting agents were very slow to get it sorted and we disputed quite a few of the charges (most of which were not taken in the end).

I got completely fed up and tried to log it with the deposit agency, but we were too late!

If you get a whiff of the agent/landlord being really slow, get on with logging something online so it is there and recorded.

Luckily for us it all worked out ok.

Yes it sounds as though your ex room mate will receive your refund!

I've checked with the tenancy deposit scheme and the details have been updated with my name on so I have the certificate which says the deposit for the property will be returned to me/current roommate so all ok on that front (managed to find the details by putting some details into the Tenancy Deposit Scheme website).

I emailed again to chase up and have been told they are ringing next week with an update Hmm
