Original stained glass windows and double glazing

We have a 1920's house with original stained glass in the hopper windows of the lounge. Its a huge bay with 5 sections (each one having two windows - a main window at the bottom and a hopper). The front of the house has another room (bedroom) with a three window bay ( which has 1980's stained glass!). All of the windows need replaced and I want them done in wood (which I'll paint white). We do have UPVC windows at the side and back of the house which I think is acceptable as the house is extended to the rear so more traditional at front and modern at back (and we have loads of windows so wood throughout would bankrupt us!)

So for the stained glass - I think my options for the lounge are

  • keep it single glazed but reglazed as current frame is rotten. Risk of stained glass being damaged. Expensive.
  • remove the stained glass and have wood double glazing (possibly out one of those cross things in the hopper for interest) lots of houses near us have done this, looks ok but obviously we lose the stained glass. I was thinking of possibly using the stained glass on an internal door at some point.
  • put stained glass inside double glazed unit. V.expensive and I've never seen this done well (but believe it can be done)

Does anyone have any experience of this and perspectives on what to do. The cheapest option (of removing the stained glass) is still coming in at £10k for the lounge and bedroom windows because of the wood .

We had encapsulated stained glass in our old house in upvc double glazing. It looked really good and preserved an original features. A previous owner had had it done.
