Big kitchen island therefore

no need for any other work surfaces?

I'm planning a new kitchen and would like to have a big island and tall cupboards on the walls with no other work surfaces.

The island would have sinks and my cooking range would be separate.

Am I missing a trick? Is it important to have as much work surface as possible in a kitchen? I just want to reduce clutter!

Depends on how big your island is going to be. Do you do any washing up? Two dishwashers would help if you don't want a draining board anywhere. Is it only you in the kitchen? I sometimes cook with my children & we need more space.

Do you have anything you need to have out - kettle, coffee machine, etc? If you have only an island then it had the potential to be very cluttered.

Can work if you have a gadget garage within your tall cabinets ... designed a few like this in development projects where they want max storage and a sleek look. Works better with slide and hide pantry doors on areas where you want to open the talk cabinets and use things insitu in the cabinet . Remember to only try this with recessed plinths - to avoid bad backs !

Tall cabinets not talk !

I'd say you need worktop spaces for -

Stacking wash up
Main prep area
Serve out area

Also kettle /coffee/tea area is important to me but then I am a tea addict.

Where is your cooker? You need work top next to it surely?

I would advise not to put sink on island - it is the biggest mistake I made and the only reason and I am pulling out my kitchen having endured years of my dirty dishes and my drying dishes being being given the most prominence in my kitchen exhibited on my island! Apart from that and what others have said - it would work well for prepping and serving up.

I have my veg prep sink in the island and it's near the fridges. I have a double Belfast sink along a wall with work surface either side and dishwasher nearby. This works well and washing up is stacked in the larger sinks if need be. Hob and one oven is in the island. The island is 3.2 m long though and 1400 wide. I have a wall of cupboards as well which include fridges, freezer and coffee machine. Other tall units include further ovens and a larder. Lots of pan and crockery storage too. The wall worksurface is mostly around the sink and is used for kettle and toaster. The island has pop up sockets.

I think you can get away with minimal work surface in addition to the island but I think a kettle and toaster are best at the side rather than in an island. (If you have them of course!)

I have a massive island. It is 4 units wide and one and a half units deep. It has my sink and draining board on it and the rest is my food prep area. I do have other work surfaces but I do not use them for anything except storing small appliances like kettle, coffee maker, slow cooker etc. I like to keep the island totally clear unless I am using it. So, you do need somewhere to put all those little appliances but you do not need another work surface to work on.

I'm having a large L-shaped island when our kitchen is done and a run of floor to ceiling wall units. The toaster and coffee machine will be kept in the Butler's Pantry unit (we're not having a kettle because we're getting a ZIP tap installed). Ovens will be in the wall too, so the island will include the sink, the hob, the dishwasher and all worktops. I'm really pleased the design so fingers crossed the reality will live up to the expectations!

Surely you need some work surface next to the hob too? Somewhere tyo put down your stirring spoon at least?

If you have to prep food too far away from the hob cooking will be a night mare. You'll be running round the kitchen from island to hob constantly.

Will the island be a breakfast bar/sitting area too? If so, you need space for doing stuff on that side too. My kids do all their drawings and homework on this part.
