Double glazing minefield - any wisdom gratefully received!

We've just moved into our new home. It's an Edwardian house with original Sash windows. Unfortunately the road outside is loud and we need to replace the windows sympathetically.

Problem is that buying double glazing is an absolute minefield! I've got 4 different quotes which all vary in price and the materials they use all differ.

Any words of wisdom on how to narrow down who to go with?

Go with a small family ran local company. Always the cheapest and best quality. We had a quote for £9k from safe style. They said if we bought on the day they could do it for £7k that was for 6 windows and a back door. Normal flat windows no bays. Went to small local company family ran buisness a rater windows pvc. Did it for £2850 including vat.

I didn't realise (until I had to) that double glazing salesmen are a nightmare.

Don't use any of the "big boys" (everest..) oops I can't remember the other names.

Double glazing is actually not v expensive (relatively speaking). I'd look at small local businesses and barter.

If noise is a problem ask them about triple glazing. It's wonderful and not much more expensive.

I'm lucky to live in a town where windows are made in a small factory.
I've had several replacement doors and windows from him.
For eg a standard white upvc door Is £315 and fitting is £100

If that helps.
