Should I just be getting the biggest I can fit/afford in the space or will my house be an oven?!!

Our bedroom has a Velux / roof window. It doesn't get hot in there, but our bedroom is on the front of the house and the daytime sun hits the back of our house. It is very light in there from about 4am though, unless you get really good blinds........ just saying as that might point you towards a smaller one ?
Also, it's very noisy when it rains heavily in the night, and when pigeons or other larger birds walk over it during the dawn chorus.

My experience would suggest not going for the biggest you can get might be preferable Grin

I have permission for three in my pitched roof over the kitchen extension. It actually going for two. I am hoping they will let in enough light without cooking us all.

The important thing would be to make sure that you have the exterior shutters so that if the sun shines directly on them you can close the shutters to keep the heat out.

But they need to be exterior - prevent the sun hitting the glass in the first place.

It's for our kitchen extension so hopefully won't be woken to the birds walking over. Interesting point about the exterior blinds-will incorporate to the plans!
How much light do you get from them? I know that's a difficult question...

We went for 2 bigger ones rather than 3 smaller as I think that will let more light it!
We also celotaped pieces of newspaper together to make them the size of the velux and laid them out on the floor in the space they were going!
This helped get the proportions right. We actually went bigger than the original planned size!

We have 2 large triple glazed and have none of those problems even with no blinds up.

We have 2 quite large, I've never noticed birds on them and rain is fairly quiet, not annoying like on a conservatory roof. The main problem is sunlight, around teatime this time of year the sun shines strongly through the windows through to the kitchen and it gets very warm. I'm going to get blinds fitted when I get round to it. Apart from that they make everything light and I love them.

We have a large one on the landing from the rooflight company. They are more discrete then velux.

As my kitchen is in a glass orangery, I like light! Generally, just get roof lights with blinds that stop the glare. More light is good in my view and tiny roof lights look stingy. Make sure you have good ventilation in the room with windows and opening doors to the garden. Then you won't overheat and you get lots of light.

We have 9 velux on our bungalow one of which is a double velux, the rooms do get flooded with light especially in the summer so we had blackout blinds fitted, I wouldn't say the rooms get especially hot but then that maybe because we have a bungalow and it is quite a large property.

Do get the kind that you can easily open without clambering on the furniture. Our old (1987) ensuite has one which requires me to clamber up.

DH refuses, claiming there must be more modern remote control ones nowadays. I like to show off how young old gimmer, risking life and limb I am still
