Painting these floorboards white.... will it look good?

I painted the floorboards in my last place and absolutely loved it - but don't know if I can paint these with the same success. Don't really want to lay new ones, but love the look of painted floorboards - and the light it reflects!

Not entirely sure what these floorboards are though. Think a thin strip of wood with veneer underneath (if that makes sense...)

Will try and attach another photo too. (I haven't moved in yet.)

They look completely flat rather than with the traditional roundedness of floorboards. Painting them flat white might just look absolutely flat white, which wouldn't be nearly as visually interesting as proper painted floorboards.

I wonder if they would take a limewash style stain without having to sand back and risking completely losing the veneer? That way, some of the grain might show through and stop it from looking completely flat.

Or you could use a white wax?

Lovlies · 04/08/2017 22:45

If you cant paint them they would look lovely as they are with lots of big white woolly rugs thrown down.

Summersunny · 04/08/2017 22:46

Ooh that sounds interesting - I will google a limewash stain.

That's my worry - sanding will take the only wood off. And they're not the nicest wooden boards. Agree that what I love about painted floors is that it shows so much texture.

Frustrating! Would love to just lay some gorgeous painted reclaimed wood down.

Any other tips for inexpensive(ish), interesting floors totally welcome! One of my husband's friends just laid cork flooring down which he said was great.

White wax also sounds interesting, laurie! I am googling these suggestions away!

(I do love a rug, lovelies)

Limewash floorstain showed me this...

I am probably dreaming to think I can achieve that with the boards I've got, right?!?

That's a gorgeous photo !

I had limewash wooden floorboards in my last house done by the previous owner. I
was lovely - still showed the wood. The house was a bit snappy chic though- think chandelier and Rocco fireplace so it suited it. My new plave is a 30s bungalow and I'm not sure it would work so well. It is worth researching and doing a test bit though.

Here are some instructions but frustratingly they use a Danish white oil - not sure what an equivalent here is. thatnordicfeeling.com/2013/08/28/how-to-give-your-floors-that-nordic-look/

Osmo have a white floor oil you can use. I haven't used it on floors myself, but I have used it on a wooden ceiling and on furniture in DC bedroom. Very hard wearing and easy to apply.

I live in Norway, there are loads of different products for this look. Any kind of floor oil with a white pigment will do the trick. Alternatively you can sand the floor lightly, apply as many coats of a white stain as you need to get the fight colour and seal with a clear floor oil.

Annie Sloane white wax might work?

Rollercoaster1920 · 05/08/2017 08:32

Are you sure they are floorboards and not laminate or engineered wood laid on your floor?

Crumbelina · 05/08/2017 08:53

I've used Osmo for floors and it's awesome. Would highly recommend it: white 3111 is the one to use. - www.osmouk.com/sitechaptern.cfm?bookid=Products&chapter=82&page=373

That was going to be my question.

kitchenlights · 05/08/2017 09:33

Sorry to hijack but can any of these white things be used on top of varnished real wood floorboards? The varnish is a bit patchy but I don't want to resand.

Summersunny · 05/08/2017 10:48

I am pretty sure they're engineered - it has been developed and I think the developer may have chosen the cheapest option. That's what makes me a little nervous about whether or not the white look will work!

Love these tips though!

Ideally would rip them up and put solid wood down but I can't afford to!
