Electrical switch keeps turning itself off...do I have a ghost?!

Hi everyone,

So I either have a ghost 😳 Or something nuts is going on with an electrical point. Basically I moved into a property a couple of months ago. And a switch on the wall which controls the cooker has started switching itself off while I'm out of the house. It's happened twice now. I'll come home and notice the cooker timer is off and try to turn it on and realise it's switched off. It's just me in the house and my toddler daughter who is way to little to be able to switch it off.

So I'm wondering if there is some weird electrical phenomenon I'm totally unware off which can turn off switches randomly?

Or I'm just losing the plot 😆

Any ideas please?

Could be a worn switch, best ask an electrician to check it out

Nooo please don't say that 😝

What's a worn switch?

It must be short circuiting (I'm no electrician though!). Why don't you turn off the mains electric and turn off every switch in the house. Then turn the mains back on. I don't know, this is what British Gas advised me to do once and it works.

Ok thanks, I suspected it was something like this :)

As Hatesummer said. I think something is tripping it, try unplugging all your devices and turning them on one at a time to see if something is overloading the circuit.
Then tell landlord or get an electrician in.

please post a photo of this switch

This happened to me (sort of) once. I'd get home and all my plug sockets would be turned off when they'd been left on!

If it's just the normal cooker switch then it probably has a broken lug inside and needs replacing. We had a wall socket that did that in reverse, it never quite clicked off, then after a while it would click on again. Replacing is a quick job for an electrician and the part is 25 pounds.

If it's actually a trip switch, then it could be a daily with your wiring and needs checking by an electrician to diagnose. Could be a faulty cooker.
