Painting a PVC door

Could anyone please give me advice about this? I've seen some old threads which suggest it can be done.

What type of paint should I be using on top of the primer? Do I need a different paint for inside and outside? Should I use brushes or a roller?

In case it's relevant the door faces East so only gets the sun in the morning. It's under a small roof and in Scotland so the sun probably isn't an issue really!

This only needs to be a short term fix as we will replace the door in the next couple of years. I just hate the colour of it and can't face looking at it anymore.

Any advice much appreciated

it probably won't look very good.

I am guessing it is a white PVC door and perhaps it is dirty, scuffed or stains.

You could use a pain-renovator as is used on old cars. T-cut or a polish. It will rub off the surface and leave it shiny. You will need a good supply of old vests to polish it off.

paint-renovator

Thanks. Maybe not such a good idea after all!

It's not while but mahogany I think.

ah, the mahogany might be a sticky film coating applied to a white door. They sometimes scuff or peel.

I'll have a play about with it. The door itself is fine.

The outside doesn't annoy me but I'm sick of seeing the inside of it and it's completely out of keeping with the rest of the interior of the house.

Thanks for your help

I painted a tatty white upvc door black with exterior dulux satin looked absolutely fine for about 10 years until we replaced the door

Lizerigar · 02/08/2017 19:10

Thanks Corneliussnitch, did you use any sort of primer?

No but I slightly keyed the surface with fine sandpaper

I've had good results painting UPVC pipes and plastic meter boxes, cleaning them with wire wool or a green scourer, finishing off with white spirit, and using a single flowing coat of oil-based non-drip gloss. I haven't done a plastic door. Beware of drips and runs around the moulding, and take off the furniture first.

I don't know how the mahogany film would take paint, though.

So far so good!

I sanded it. 3 coats of primer, then 3 coats of eggshell to match the rest of the woodwork inside. Now I just need to see how it stands the test of time.

Thanks for all the advice.

Strictly may I ask what primer and eggshell you used ? I've looked at the sandex range but don't like the exterior paint colours they have

StrictlyCooking · 08/08/2017 10:25

I've only done the inside so far. The outside is this weeks job, I had to wait for Scotland to finally get some sun Grin

I used a Ronseal primer and I'm planning to use a dulux paint on top outside.

I painted mine about a month ago using frenchic exterior paint. Lightly sanded the door, cleaned it with sugar soap' masked off the glass and applied 3 coats. Easy least and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.
