Is the kitchen fitter overcharging?

Am I being ripped off? 😮 Live in East Midlands, kitchen fitter charging £2,200 for fitting in a new build which is a blank canvass as nothing to take out, floor filing and plastering all done, carcasses already made, electrics in place apart from minor adjustment for lights under cupboards...anyone else think this is an awful lot or can name any recommendations? Don't really know who else to go to. Last kitchen fitted by someone who did v short days, charged for full and then didn't fit things correctly e.g. Fridge freezer... 😥

Kitchen: two towers both with appliances, 12 base cupboards, 6 wall cupboards, bit of faff with mantle. Dishwasher.
Tiny utility: fitted freezer and washing machine, 2 wall cupboards.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I have that sinking feeling....

You need to get 3 quotes in total.

Look on check a trade.

Hunkle · 31/07/2017 23:10

Also ring your local Howdens, Homebase, look on industrial estates for kitchen suppliers, (and carpenters that are local), ring them all & ask for recommendations or their own fitter.

It seems a lot to me. We were having a full refurb but then added getting the kitchen fitted by our builders who charged £900 which included electrics and gas stove installment. The kitchen companies' fitters were all much more expensive and closer to £2k. This was a few years ago though.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 31/07/2017 23:24

I have been quoted £2000, based on £400 per day (2 local guys, father & son), to fit a much smaller kitchen, but we are in the SE. He's an older bloke & he's lovely, I think it would be a lot like having your (skilled) Dad do it, but I really can't justify it. I'm getting other quotes (I would anyway).

If anyone knows a good fitter in the SE who wants to quote, please feel free to PM me! 😊 They'll be well looked after & can use the loo 😂

That does sound high...
Here's a rough Which guide : local.which.co.uk/advice/cost-price-information-kitchen-fitters

I recently had my standard U shape kitchen done by an independent fitter for £120/day (took 4 days, including building cabinets, a little bit of plumbing for the sink, old units already removed)

Definitely get more quotes! We were quoted nearly £3000 by b&q for their fitting!

wowfudge · 01/08/2017 07:09

That sounds high if the room is empty and the units supplied rigid. Get more quotes.

Pradaqueen · 01/08/2017 08:58

Too much as Wowfudge says. I'd get a quote from a carpenter on a day rate. If the carcasses are already made, I'd expect it to take one man 5 days to fit it perhaps brining in another to help fit for 2 bring it down to around 3 days for 2 men so around 6x £150-£180 per day. I renovate houses for a living so I Hope that helps.

SuzieQuatro · 01/08/2017 09:04

That's massive.

Our fitter charged about £900 to do what you've described. We also had to have extensive electrical and plumbing work and the whole thing plastered which drove up the overall cost. But just fitting was about £900.

We had a quote for £4,000 Shock

Get more quotes. Go with your gut, if you feel this guy is taking the piss, he probably is.

Pradaqueen · 01/08/2017 09:07

I'd also add to suzie's point above that occasionally I've had tradespeople quote massive £'s because they are too busy and don't really want the work. It makes them a massive PITA if you do give it to them. So don't. Not sure why they do it. Weird psychology I guess (and 9 times out of 10, it's a plumber, but that's a whole other thread Grin)

SuzieQuatro · 01/08/2017 09:11

Pradaqueen That's exactly what we thought happened with our guy who quoted £4,000. It's such a waste of everyone's bloody time. Why can't they just say they're too busy ATM Angry

YorkshireTea86 · 01/08/2017 09:44

We've been quoted £2100 fitting pretty large u shape kitchen and including plastering 25sqm room and blocking up a door, some plumbing to move but no electrics to do. I'm in Yorkshire.

Smile thank you for the tips. It seems excessive but it's just finding some who's decent, trustworthy and cheaper 😕 Will take a look. Daunting doing this and moving house...,
