Loft conversion disruption

If you had a loft conversion, how long did it take and how much disruption was caused in your house? We're thinking of having just a basic conversion done - no dormers or bathrooms or anything.

Ours took about 8 weeks, quite basic but with bathroom and dormer window. Disruption was minimal until they knocked through to fit the staircase as they would enter/exit through the scaffolding. They spent about 2 weeks in the house plastering, fitting fire doors, smoke alarms and general making good.

Ours was around 8 weeks too (bit longer to finish bathroom install, decorating, fitted wardrobes etc) but without a dormer should be quite a lot quicker?

Disruption wise ours was much less hassle than I thought. I was slightly worried how much dust etc there would be but it was fine! Ours started late so I was having it done 8/9 months pregnant and when I brought dd home they still needed to finish the electrics etc but it all went so smoothly and was not v disruptive luckily!

Depends. We needed a new roof. 1980s house. Roof wasn't the right angle to do a loft conversion.

Thats good news that it wasn't very disruptive. We know the roof is fine for height as neighbour in terrace already has one. I'm just wondering about the impact on lives while it's happening as I have two young children.

Dust and noise!

HipsterHunter · 31/07/2017 14:35

Defo go for a dormer if you can - makes it SO much more usable

AlpacasPackOwls · 31/07/2017 17:31

We can't have a dormer.

Stairs only took one day for the main fitting. Ours went in and out through the roof too, not sure if that would be the same if no dormer though?

noise and dust, ours took 10 weeks, the builders were great, my youngest DD was getting the loft room, and they had to take a portion off her small bedroom to fit the staircase in, they let her help knock down the wall!

the noise is the new joists being laid over the old and then the new floor, I could still her the hammering weeks after they left! so please warn your neighbours.

the dust was unbelievable, but it was eventually cleared up. it didnt help that we had to remove the dd bedroom wall :-)
