Tiles Vs Vinyl Kitchen Floor?

We're currently having a new kitchen fitted having just had an extension built. I'm not sure what to go for on the floor.

I had looked at Karndean / Amtico but the price puts me off! So I then considered a thick vinyl (either plank or tile, not lino).

Having just spoken to the plumber, I'm now not sure. He recommends tiles all the way. It's a heavy traffic area and obviously will get water from the kitchen (& probably the dog coming in from the garden). I'm just thinking that tiles will be cold - budget doesn't stretch to underfloor heating!

What would you recommend? Budget is about £1000 for approx 30 sq. m.

Having the same sort of extension and we've gone for laminate that is kitchen/bathroom suitable so it can cope with any water.
I liked Amtico but had karndean in my current kitchen, cost a fortune and looks awful. We have wood everywhere else downstairs and vinyl in our utility so wood effect laminate will match best for us and easy to replace in the future.
Got ours from wickes in the sale less than £400 for the same size space and hubby can lay it too.

I have mixed size porcelain tiles but they look like limestone. No-one can tell the difference and very dog proof. I think it depends on the value of the house too. There are great large format tiles with little grout neeeded available at Porcelanosa. I think they look classy. Depends if it worth the money to you and in the value of the house.

I wanted Amtico but the waiting list in my area was too long (I couldn't stand another moment without a floor!) so I went for tiles. I was worried it would be cold too, but it's actually really nice and in summer the cats love lying on the tiles to keep themselves cool. I've been tempted to join them a few times.

Thanks for all the advice everyone - very helpful. I'm still umming and aahiing! Think I'm wavering towards tiles now.

Will they be slippy? The tiles on my DMs kitchen floor are treacherous! Presumably you can get less 'shiny' polished ones?

Thanks Briette - think the dog would love that too!!

Some of the tiles are non slip with quite a matt finish. Slate is fairly non slip. Mine are slippery if wet but you just avoid a wet area and dry it! They are only wet when I clean the floor though!

I went for matt ceramic tiles, quite heavy duty ones, and they're fine for walking around in normal socks without any slipping (unlike our wood laminate floors elsewhere which are lethal after cleaning). I have some gorgeous rough tiles upstairs which are even less slippy, but they'd probably be impossible to keep clean in a kitchen. If you can go and check some tile samples in person you should be able to get a good idea of which types offer more grip.

We have vinyl tiles (similar to karndean). They are slippy as hell if so much as a drop of water gets on them they are like an ice rink. They also have scratched quite badly so they never look clean. I will have tiles in my next kitchen!!!

FrogFairy · 01/08/2017 10:51

I hate my kitchen floor tiles because they are cold, hard and very slippery.

I like the look of Quick Step impressive laminate flooring which is supposed to be waterproof.

We have quickstep livyn ambient click plus luxury vinyl tiles in our kitchen and I love them, they are really easy to clean, hardwearing, non slip and I think they look great. We've had several compliments on them too. They are soft and warm underfoot too.

We replaced porcelanosa ceramic tiles and pergo laminate with karndean Van Gogh about 8 yrs ago. Can honestly say it was a good decision, it's warm underfoot and although it's scratched in places it just looks like real wood. It's not slippery when spills happen and is very easy to clean. It gets vacuumed daily and steam cleaned every week. Its hard to get excited about flooring but with kids and pets it's been a good all round flooring and can't see why that would change any time soon.

MiladyThesaurus · 02/08/2017 11:22

We've got amtico in the kitchen at the moment and we hate it. It's hard to keep clean (for no good reason we can find), feels weird underfoot (oddly slippy yet sticky), is uncomfortable to walk on (it's very thin and you may as well be walking on the concrete floor underneath) and looks utterly shit too.

We are replacing it with tiles.

We have a lab so got non slip vinyl and it is deffo brill

Safe non slip

Warm in bare feet

Safe from dropping glasses or China won't break

Sorry to hoof a 2 yr old thread, just wanted to angst about my tile flooring [which looks great, BTW], it is quite slippy when wet and super, super hard, my daughter cut her head quite badly on it falling when little, also I'm used to the fact that any kitchenware dropped on it will explode, but the other day I dropped a newish £300 dyson handheld vacuum onto it from a height of less than a metre, the result was close to what I'd expect if I'd given it a hefty smack with a good-sized hammer, definitely unusable, worth considering, thanks.

MyNameIsJane · 21/07/2019 06:06

I have just had a Polyflor fitted in the downstairs of my house and it is very good!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/07/2019 12:39

Speaking from experience, the trouble with tiles is that if you drop anything breakable on them, it's going to break, and if it's heavy enough, it'll very likely crack the tile, too.

I'd go for good quality vinyl any day - easy to clean, no grout to get manky, and a lot warmer underfoot.
Not to mention cold and hard for any very little ones to crawl or play on,
if that's an issue.
