Obsessing over tiny detail of renovation - any opinions?

We're mid-renovation and I've lost all ability to think straight, so opinions from others welcomed!

Here's our front door. When I chose the colour, I planned to also paint the hallway cupboard frames and a stained glass window frame (both currently institutional green) in the same colour. But, in practice, the door is a much lighter blue than I imagined, and I worry that it'll look odd in the other two places. If I wasn't 8 months pregnant and rapidly running out of cash I'd repaint the door.

Pics of all attached. Will this look good? If not, what to do with the two frames?

I'd paint the cupboard architrave and window frame white instead. No need to highlight the cupboards by using another colour and the lovely stained glass will show up better (and you'll get more light reflected around it) with a white frame.

Agree with wow

circumcisiondecision · 31/07/2017 10:29

Think I'd just paint both white actually? It's quite a bright colour, that blue, and will stand out hugeley on the doorframes and detract from the stained glass.

I think wow's plan is good. I like the colour of the blue; rather than echo it in other woodwork, can you pick it up some other way (eg soft furnishings or nicknacks)

HipsterHunter · 31/07/2017 11:12

+1 for @wowfudge's suggestion

EssentialHummus · 31/07/2017 11:18

I suppose I worry that white everywhere will just look clinical, and that some highlighting/break in colour is needed. But it sounds like you all don't think so - interesting.

Put some pictures up for a shot of colour - it looks as though it can be quite dark in the hallway so keeping everything light will help.

EssentialHummus · 31/07/2017 12:07

wow - yes, hallway is very dark, and stained glass is internal (?) so doesn't help much.

I would suggest white too. Though if it were me I'd probably just do it blue anyway, I think the door looks lovely.

wowfudge · 31/07/2017 14:25

Put a large mirror up to help bounce the light from the window around - handy to check you don't have lippy on your teeth on the way out of the door too.

Deffo paint white! You can get some lovely artwork or photos on the wall for colour!

RatRolyPoly · 31/07/2017 14:32

I'm another obsessor over the details; even more so once the project's underway! What I've learnt in my recent project is... if in doubt, stick to the original plan. Sometimes there are times you JUST KNOW something needs to change, but when you're an obsessor it's easy to get caught in the trap of umming and erring endlessly. If in doubt, stick to the plan. (You can always change it later but you'll kick yourself if you have to change it back!)

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 31/07/2017 14:33

I think it needs to be white tio

EssentialHummus · 31/07/2017 16:48

It's hard to describe, but the front door opens onto a central hallway, with the hallway cupboards in front of it, on either side of a large window. You then turn left, and the stained glass is at the end of a long corridor, with the loo on one side and bedrooms on the other. So the entrance area is well-lit and very bright, but the stained glass area is dim and unsalvageable with mirrors etc.

I'd paint the cupboard surrounds white (or whatever colour the skirting is) and the stained glass window surround blue.

monkeywithacowface · 31/07/2017 19:13

My first thought was to say go with white as well.

viques · 31/07/2017 19:16

Are you planning on changing the light fitting on the ceiling in front of the stained glass, I think if you were to put a shade on the current flex it would block the glass too much, a smaller light, or ceiling spots would be better. Paint the cupboards all white, the little line of colour emphasises them too much. If you want colour there get some coloured handles or knobs.

EssentialHummus · 31/07/2017 21:51

That's a good point viques. We've not decided yet, but I think your logic is spot on.

Totally agree with everyone, but, being lazy, I'd probably just leave the green paint around the stained glass window now. Grin
